Exhaust Gas Emissions ‘The exhaust gas, although in extremely small quantities, contains CO,, NOx, CO, SOx, and HC, ‘The exhaust emissions, ultimately, cause acid rains, photochemical smog, air pollutions and global warming. ‘The reduction of exhaust gas emissions now represents one of the important themes for the engine manufac- turers. Notably on NOx, IMO, in 1997, added the protocol, regulations to prevent air pollution by ships to the conven- tional oceanic pollution prevention treaty, which has been in effect since May 19, 2005. ‘The 12AYM-Wis the environmentally friendly engine, likewise the case with YANMAR’s conventional engines, employs ASSIGN combustion system. The 12AYM-W, without the use of a special equipment, clears the reg- ulated value of NOx emissions by IMO. The engine is fuel-thrifty and produces exhaust smoke with satisfac- tory color, too. This may cause the crankshaft to break. Be sure to measure the deflection. Normally, you have to measure the deflection of the No. 1 cylinder arm on the direct-mount side of the marine gear. But, in the case of the engine with power take off (PTO) on the engine front, you also have to measure the deflection of the No. 6 cylinder on the front side. Besides, these couplings are effective as a damper for torsional vibrations since the coupling owns a high damping characteristics, The sectional drawing of the coupling is shown at the right and below. When using the coupling for the vibration isolating installation of the propulsion engine, RATO coupling and CENTA coupling having two lines of element arranged in the axial direction is used as a standard to ensure higher elastic performance. (The application channels in the case of marine propulsion engine replacement are not necessarily those mentioned below.) © In the case of shipping classification organization: the report is prepared by the marine propulsion engine manufacturer and presented to the organization, Even when no certificate of the shipping classification organization is required, the calculation of the torsional vibrations is stil required since it is necessary to check that the vibrations would not give influence to the shafts, gears and power transmission elastic coupling in the service range from the idling speed to the rated operation speed. Based on the results of this calculation, itis possible to check whether the torsional stress working on shafts, the torsional vibration torque or thermal load working on the elastic coupling, amplitudes on gears are within the allowable range. ‘The report of the torsional vibration calculation must cover the calculation when the front drive equipment of the propulsion engine, (firefighting pump, cargo pump, auxiliary generator, fishing pump, etc.), is used to check whether there is no problem with such application. @ Torsional vibration calculation report For use with the torsional vibration calculation, following four values in the equivalent shaft system model are necessary. * Inertial moment value or GD2 value (GRz may be substituted with detailed specifications) = The dynamic torsion spring constant of each shaft system or the equivalent length * Minimum shaft diameter of each shaft system “Tensile strength of each shaft system ‘When the equivalent shaft system mode! mentioned before is not available, following parts diagram or values are necessary to prepare the equivalent shaft system model: © Calculation materials on propeller and stern shaft system + Intermediate shaft and flange couplings at both ends (tensile strength or material must be specified.) + Drawings of propeller shaft and intermediate shaft side flange couplings (tensile strength or material must be specified.) + Propeller's inertial moment or GD. Both of these systems have the same purpose. The difference between these systems is that the wet exhaust system injects water into the exhaust to cool the exhaust, so that it can be placed safely through areas that cannot tolerate a hot pipe, the dry exhaust system discharges the exhaust without cooling with water. For safety reasons, an exhaust system must be made gas tight. Proper insulation of exposed dry exhaust sys- tem piping is necessary to protect, personnel from injury, to prevent excessive rise of engine room temperatures, and to protect temperature-sen- sitive electricalmechanical components within the engine room, Exhaust Hazard + Never operate the engine in an enclosed area, such as a garage, tunnel, underground room, man- hole or ship's hold, without proper ventilation. + Never block windows, vents or other means of ventilation if the engine is operating in an enclosed area. All internal combustion engines create carbon monoxide gas during operation. Accumulation of this gas within an enclosure could cause illness or even death. + Make sure that all connections are tightened to specifications after repair is made to the exhaust system. Burn Hazard ‘Never touch hot engine surfaces, such as the muffler, exhaust pipe, turbocharger (if equipped) and engine block, during operation and shortly after you shut the engine down. These surfaces are extremely hot while the engine is operating and could seriously burn you. NOTICE For maximum engine life, YANMAR recommends that when shutting the engine down, allow the engine to idle, without load, for 5 minutes. This will allow the engine components that operate at high temperatures, such as the turbocharger (if equipped) and exhaust system, to cool slightly before the engine itself is shut down, YANMAR 12AYM-W Product Information Al Intake and Exhaust System No. Page Installation of Exhaust System 05-02-00 on General caution for exhaust piping 1.1n order to prevent burns or other injuries and temperature rise in the engine compartment, (due to heat radiation from the exhaust piping), provide lagging around the exhaust piping. For the lagging, use a heat-esisting sheet coated with metal sheet or a oiltight metal fol The surface temperature of the exhaust piping should be kept below 100 °C (212 °F). 2. The exhaust pipes are installed for larger diameter than the diameter, which is recommended in each engine. (See Dry Exhaust system piping on page 2/7 of this Chapter.) 3. Extremely sharp bends and throttling ofthe piping cause back-pressure will ead to mal-combustion (abnormal exhaust color, increased fuel consumption, etc.). Make the flow resistance of the exhaust piping as small as possible. The back pressure in the piping must be below; 6.0 kPa (0.87 psi): (for Dry exhaust system) 6.0 kPa (0.87 psi): (for Wet exhaust system) 4,Do not apply the weight and stress from thermal expansion or distortion of the exhaust pipe to the turbo charger and exhaust manifold. Use a heat-resisting bellows in the exhaust piping to absorb the stress from the thermal expansion or distortion, and then support the piping using a stay. Be sure to prevent exhaust gas leakage Dry exhaust system ‘The exhaust is discharged directly from the upper part or the side of the hull 1. Elbows are used to make resistance to exhaust flow smaller. 2. Thermal extension of the exhaust pipe can be completely absorbed by the expansion joint. Add one set of flexible bellows at 4 m (13.1 ft) intervals of the exhaust pipe. 3, Expand the bellows to the specified length (from their free length) prior to installation. 4.Fasten the exhaust pipe at a point as far as possible from the bellows. ‘Support the piping with bellows by wire stays, etc. so that the center of the exhaust pipe and the bellows are in line. Attach an adjustable fitting (lum buckle) to the stays and adjust the stay length to align the position of exhaust pipe. Adjust the tumbuckle at 100 % load when expanded. 5.Provide a drain plug at the bottom end of the vertical pipe to remove drain water for daily maintenance. 6. Remove the dummy bolts of the exhaust belows after finishing the support Recommended diameter of exhaust pipe T2AYMEAWGT 12 AYM-WET 12 AYMAWST Exhaust pipe diameter 20046 in.) YANMAR
