Activity #4: Individual Activity (Family Health Case Study) [3 hours]

Task: With your own family as your focus of study, you will assess its characteristics and dynamics and
the health and health-related problems and needs present by following the processes of family health
nursing.

Family Health Case Study (Paguigan Family)

INTRODUCTION: Family is the unit of all services in all community health nursing programmes. The health
of our members affect the welfare of other members in the community. This family health nurse optimize
the health and well-being of children, women, and families in a changing multicultural society through
nursing programs of teaching, research and practice as well as through community service. Because
family health nursing is family focused, it provides opportunity for good working relationship with the
family working with families keeps families live alongside illness and obstacles. Family helath nursing is
directed at families whose members are both healthy and ill, and is being offered in settings in which
individuals present with physiologie or psychological problems. In rendering this care, consideration of
the relationships between and among family members is very important.

FIRST LEVEL ASSESSMENT: INITIAL DATA BASE

Family Structure, Characteristics, and Dynamics

- Paguigan family cosist of 8 members (2 ladies and 6 gentlemen) whose really got a close bond
with each other. 5 of 8, including the parents are already in the workforce and provide for the
family. Though not living together due to work and studies, the family remains intact and
decisions are usually discussed to each members of the family to avoid major conflicts and
misunderstandings.

Socio-economic and Cultural Characteristics

- With an income of 1,200 a day from their sari-sari store business, it is more than enough to
sustain the families daily needs for 3 members are already done studying and are providing for
themselves. The other 3 are still studying and finances are contributed from both parents and
siblings who are working. 1 is currently unemployed due to the effect of the pandemic. All
members in the family are Pentecostal exept the father and the first born and are active in
different community bayanihans and church activities for the community.

Home and Environment

- Home is established alongside the national road so access to vehicles is not a problem. Home is
with adequate living space, great food storage facilities and an amazing environment. Baragay
clinic is 5 minutes away while hospital is 12 km away. Exposures to dust, smokes, and noise
emitted by passing cars is quite risky and dangerous specialy to the children. Problems with
sanitation and waste disposal are also present since burning and disposing waste in the river
were practiced. An open drainage system is located beside the house causing as breeding place
for vectors.

Health Status of each Family Member

- Both parents are taking medication for maintenance due to hypertension and arthritis. 2 out of 6
children have hospital records due to dengue, 1 was due to pneumonia and the other three are in good
health condition and are doing a good job in maintaining their health. Though common cough and colds
were experienced during the first month of this year, it was eventually healed with over the counter
medicines and some home remedies practiced to be proven and tested.

Values, Habits, Practices on Health Promotion, Maintenance and Disease Prevention.

- Everyone in the family have complete immunizations. The most common exercise done by each
member is walking and jogging since most places being visited in the community are walking distance.
Due to work ,studies, and some unknown reasons some are deprived of 8 hours sleep and mostly sleep
for 3-5 hours a day.
