CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introversion is a human personality and were found in the field

of psychology. Introverts are quiet and bashful. They don't seek out

social interaction that much.

According to Holland (2018) an introvert is often thought of as

a person who is quiet, reserved, and thoughtful. As these activities

may leave introverts feeling tired and depleted, they do not pursue

special attention or any social obligations.

Some of the introverts prefer to communicate through texting

than having an actual conversation face-to-face or call and on the

other hand they tend to usually talk but only to those they know. They

like to observe situations before they get in on the act and analytical

before speaking. In terms of academic, introverts face many

challenges. The first one is being alone; although we heard a lot of

saying that ‘introverts choose to be alone’. Yet they are still human

who can feel loneliness and sadness that can lead to lose in interest

especially in studying. Second, in terms of expressing their own ideas

to present in front of the class or participating in answering teacher’s

question, some of introvert students are not participating because

they do not have the confident to express themselves, they feel very

pressure due to people’s mindset for having a high expectation to

them for being smart and organize because they are known as a

thoughtful individual which caused them stress. That is why their

participation in class are low graded. However, the researchers seek

to find the solution for this study for the purpose of helping and

understand those grade 12 students in Metro Manila College who have

this type of personality traits. Most importantly, these introvert

students in Metro Manila College are in the strand of Humanities and

Social Sciences, this strand often engages in public speaking and

social interaction. Furthermore, this school year 2020-2021, the new

normal of studying in Metro Manila College is done through online that

students and teachers are supposed to be more interactive. With the

aim that Grade 12 students of Humanities and Social Sciences from

matter amidst pandemic.

LITERATURE. The following context are from books, Articles from

magazine, law news and internet.

ABILITIY TO LEARN

Introversion according to Cherry (2021), introversion is

a personality feature that focuses not on external stimuli but on

internal feelings. Introverts and extroverts are often seen as two

extreme opposites, but most people lie in the middle. While introverts

make up about 25-40% of the population, this type of personality still

contains many misunderstandings. It must also be noted that

METRO MANILA COLLEGE
4
Humanities and Social Sciences
introversion is not the same as social anxiety or shyness. They are not

socially anxious or shy when you are an introvert.

Moreover, introverts are one of the principal

characteristics identified in many personality theories. Individuals who

are introverts tend to move or focus more inwardly than on external

stimulation, thoughts, feelings and moods. Introversion, together with

extroversion, is generally seen as part of a continuum. Introversion

shows one end of the scale and extroversion the other end. With

Jung's work the terms ‘introversion and extroversion’ were made more

popular and later became central elements of the other prominent

theories, including the 5 great personality theory. Another four areas

identified by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (The Myers-Briggs

Personality Type Indicator is a self-report inventory designed to

identify a person's personality type, strengths, and preferences. The

questionnaire was developed by Isabel Myers and her mother

Katherine Briggs based on their work with Carl Jung's theory of

personality types.) are the introversion/extroversion dimension

(MBTI). Everyone has a degree of both introversion and extroversion,

according to many personality theories. People are often leaning one

way or the other, however.

Further, introverts are usually calmer, more reserved and

more reliable. Introverts have to spend energy in social situations, as

opposed to extroverts who gain energy through social interaction.

When people have participated in a party or spent time in a large

group, they often feel the need to "recharge" themselves by spending

time on their own.

In addition, as stated eloquently by Legg and Holland

(2018), an introvert is often seen as a silent, reserved and reckless

person. They are not looking for special attention or social

commitments, as introvert events may feel exhausted and destroyed.

Introverts are the other way around from extroverts. Often extroverts

are described as a party's life. They are trying to interact and talk. It

is a social event that you will not miss and you prosper within the

hectic surroundings. Smith (2019), an introvert is a person who

exhibits certain personality traits known as introversion. which means

they feel more comfortable concentrating on their inner thoughts and

ideas instead of the outside. Instead of large group or group of

people, you enjoy spending time with only one or two people.

You may think of a person who is timid or silent and who likes to be

alone when you listen to the word introvert. Whilst for some introverts

this is true, there is a lot more to this type of personality. It depends

on how you process the world around you whether you are an

introvert or an extrovert. According to Breit (2018), there are many

misunderstandings about introverts — such as being antisocial,

unfriendly, shy or lonely. However, an introvert can in many cases

indeed be an advantage. According to Dr Jennifer Kahnweiler, author

of The Introverted Leader: Building your Stillness, introverts are

people that get their energy from spending time alone. ‘They're

recharging a kind of battery, she says. ‘Then they can go out into the

world and beautifully connect with people.’ Urick (2017), the

personality trait of introversion. Personality features are considered to

be stable features which reach the very core of a person. In other

words, a person can be seen as trends or preferences that encourage

specific behavior. A personality is an aspect of which an individual "is"

and many popular concepts identify introversion as a personality

dimension that people possess. In popular culture, introversion is

often used to be ‘shy’, but more academically it is defined than

extroversion in which people are energized by being around others. It

is energized by quiet and reflective times. An introvert may sometimes

be a challenge. Since some introverts often prefers quiet and alone,

others that are extroverted in nature may look cool, remote or even

anti-social. Introverts can also experience difficulties connecting them

to other professionals while they are engaged in face-to-face

networking or looking for mentorship.

FAMILY AS A SOCIAL INSTITUTION

According to Kaur (2019), family influences individuals.

They also provide emotional support, economic well-being and

nurture. Also, based on Martin’s (2020), study many students

experienced positive and negative impact of online learning and some

of these are economic conditions and anxiety.

(2021). Parents are the first educational environment, because they

mold to the personality of their children. As explained by Price (2021),

despite the fact that introverts account for at least half of the

population, parents and a wide segment of society regard being

introverted as a strange trait. We want our children to have big groups

of friends and to participate in activities with other kids because we

believe that it is what a normal child looks like but we should start

appreciating the introverts for their unique strengths and talents.

Furthermore, it is said by Diaz-Sabado (2020), parents

and guardians are a learning facilitator because of the home-based

learning and these are to help capacitate and support them.

Meanwhile, the DepEd advised parents to encourage their

children to: watch educational shows; make it a habit to read in both

English and Filipino; read books; practice and enhance writing skills;

enhance arts skills and other interests or hobbies; and exercise.

ACADEMIC PEFORMANCE

According to Bongato (2018), the outcome of

schooling, and it measures how well a student or teacher has met

their educational objectives and is usually measured by examinations

or continuous assessment but there is no general agreement on how

it is best tested.

According to Haleja (2020), introverts prefer to work

alone and deeply on tasks that are important to them, as well as hang

out with only one or two friends at a time. Teachers are led to

conclude that there is something wrong with being introverted and

that it needs to be healed, rather than simply acknowledged and

embraced, for those students who do not adhere to this ideal. Also,

Lestari, Sada and Suhartono (2015), extroverted and introverted

students’ abilities were compared and it was discovered that introverts

prefer to study alone whereas extroverts prefer to study with their

peers.

Furthermore, Tretiak, Severynovska & Boyko (2016), the

more introversion is expressed, the more intuition is developed.

Academically successful students demonstrated a positive correlation

between the abstract-symbolic thinking type and introversion. —

introverts were more successful.

In contrary, Adjei, Dontoh, & Boateng (2018), a person

correlation revealed a weak negative correlation between introverts

and their academic performance in the Child and Adolescent

Development and Learning (CADL) course and a weak negative

correlation between introverts and their academic achievement in

DISEASE OUTBREAK: COVID-19

According to Li (2020), the COVID-19 has resulted in

schools shut all across the world. As a result, education has changed

and become e-learning, whereby teaching is undertaken on digital

platforms.

Base on the study from Corona virus Disease (COVID-

19): Psychological Reactions to the Pandemic, the role of several

demographic factors in determining COVID19-related mental health

symptoms was also examined—results showed that introversion

predicted more severe loneliness, anxiety, and depression

experienced as a function of COVID19-related circumstantial changes,

but not cognitive impairments. Also, Walker (2020), stated that

introverts are more prone to anxiety. This anxiety is more likely to be

triggered by the evolving atmosphere and unfamiliar circumstances of

learning at home, making introvert students less able to learn and

participate.
METRO MANILA COLLEGE
12
Humanities and Social Sciences
In contrary, Roberts (2021), during this tragic year, it

was introverts who found advantages and enjoying. There was more

time alone, more peace and less of the personal and professional

pressures they find so draining.

However, Subban (2020), several studies

demonstrated the variations in the pandemic reactions of extroverts

and introverts. Life in a capsule is tailored to an introvert, normally

calming and organized, as Luke Smillie and Nick Haslam (2020) point

out. The comparisons of Gary Nunn (2020) to families living in the

same houses and finding themselves on different ends of the

continuum show the newly discovered introvert intimacy, which does

not naturally lead them to talk or communicate with others. Frank

Chow (2020), on the other hand, told introverts about the dangers

which may arise when they are locked out and are reintegrated in

society. I pondered this and wondered if the world had really

developed an appreciation of the life goals sought by introverts over

the years.

INTROVERTED AND EXTROVERTED SKILLS AND

COMPARISON

Hussain, Abu Sa'aleek and Elenzi (2020),

investigated the impact of flipped learning on students' English

achievement and found that both introvert and extrovert students

performed better in flipped classes. Extroversion and introversion are

two commonly recognized phenomena in the world. Despite the

widespread usage of the word, no one can be categorized as an

extrovert or an introvert because extroversion and introversion coexist

in both, though in different proportions. As a result, it's safe to

conclude that the students’ personality traits in this study were judged

as a subjective assumption. The typical introvert is a quiet,

introspective person who prefers books to people; he is withdrawn

and distant, with the exception of close friends. they prefer to prepare

ahead, “looks before he leaps,” and distrusts gut instinct. the dislikes

suspense, treats daily matters with proper seriousness, and prefers a

well-ordered lifestyle.
METRO MANILA COLLEGE
14
Humanities and Social Sciences
He keeps his emotions under tight control, rarely acts aggressively,

and does not lose his cool easily. He is dependable, cynical, and

ethical values are very important to him.

In addition, there has been very limited study comparing

flipped and conventional classes in general, a review of previous

studies shows that (Abedi, et al., 2019; Ekmekci, 2017; Karimi &

Hamzavi, 2017; Namaziandost et., 2019). During clerkship rotations,

introverted students receive lower overall ratings for interpersonal

activity. Feeling like misfits, failing to get a word in edgewise,

challenging the need to change their identity to succeed in school,

and being judged as underperformers are all themes that emerge

from focus groups of introverted medical students. Introverts are

more likely than their extroverted peers to experience depression and

burnout during medical school as a result of these obstacles. This has

major consequences for introverts, whose professional identity and

leadership ability will be influenced by their early life experiences.

Also, according to Amiryousefi (2019), no research has

looked at the effect of mind mapping-based flipped learning on the

METRO MANILA COLLEGE
15
Humanities and Social Sciences
speaking skills of introvert and extrovert English as a foreign language

(EFL) student. As a result, the current research will add to the existing

literature by filling in this void. The effect of personality traits on

second or foreign language learning has piqued the researchers'

interest. The aim of this study is to see if there is a statistically

significant relationship between introvert and extrovert EFL learners'

willingness to interact and their tolerance for

uncertainty.

People say they enjoy momentary extraverted behavior,

and it does not seem to be related to their introversion–extraversion

trait levels. If introverts want to have fun, this result begs the

question: why do introverts act extraverted more often? Trait

introverts make an affective forecasting mistake, underestimating the

hedonic advantages of extraverted actions, according to this study.

When asked to imagine behaving extraverted but not introverted in a

number of hypothetical circumstances, trait introverts predicted less

triggered positive and fun affect and more negative and self-conscious
METRO MANILA COLLEGE

affect (compared to extraverts). Introverts appeared to be less

accurate in these tests, particularly when it came to overestimating

the negative affect and self-consciousness associated with their

extraverted behavior. This may explain why introverts don't behave

extraverted more frequently (i.e., they overestimate hedonic costs

that never materialize), as well as consequences for recognizing and

possibly changing introverts' lower levels of happiness.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Challenges and Advantages of Introverted Students in a

Virtual Learning Environment

Many introverts in the virtual academic environment are

motivated to study in an online classroom, since they can make their

creation available in discussion forums. In the pandemic period, they

will combine the warmth of their home with their academic and online

social lives.

However, introverted students are largely emotionally

calm and all of them are socially anxious when talking to their friends

or teachers. They cannot perform in simulated interviews effectively

nor be able to establish contacts with their colleagues because of their

fears. About the fear of communication in the virtual world with their

peers, many introverts are able to express their thoughts in their

academics in critical ways.

METRO MANILA COLLEGE
18
Humanities and Social Sciences
In general, they participate actively in virtual schools and

are often poorly socialized to contribute with their peers to the

solution of real-life issues. During lectures in an online setting,

introductions are reserved with attention to detail. In addition, they

are able to manage their time and use their imagination with their

colleagues for Student project ideas through text or other written

communication processes. Introverted students have better time to

contact message teachers by Zoom to help minimize social anguish

when asking a question. Because they are socially anxious in a

person's classroom setting, writing becomes the favored coping tool

among introverts for articulating ideas during simulated lectures in

school forums and zoom talks. This increases class involvement

among introverted.

The implications of an introvert are a lack of social skills

and a desire to live in a simulated world. In addition, they are timid

to get an erroneous query from both simulated and personal worlds

of their instructors. With the passage of weeks during the six-month

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

semester, introverts feel the huge pressure of finishing them within a

tight time. Introverts use a passive method in contrast to extroverts

who use an aggressive method in tension management.

Introverts who fight social anxiety need to get out of their own shell

and deny their peers psychological concerns in a simulated or in-

person atmosphere that speaks for themselves. (Ho, 2021)

METHODS OF RESEARCH

This chapter presents the different techniques,

methods and procedures employed in gathering the data needed. It

contains the research design, co-researchers, sampling technique,

research instrument, questionnaire, construction of the instruments,

validation of the instruments and the statistical treatment of data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used Descriptive method of

research. As defined by McCombes, (2020) Descriptive research

seeks to describe a population, situation, or phenomenon in detail and

methodically. It can answer the questions what, where, when, and

how, but not why. A descriptive research design may examine one or

more variables using a variety of research methods.

Unlike experimental study, the researcher does not influence or alter

the variables; instead, they are observed and measured.

RESPONDENTS

The co-researchers of the study were 50 Grade 12

HUMSS students in metro manila college enrolled in the school year

2020-2021.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The researchers used simple random sampling to

conduct this study. As cited by Cherry, (2021) a random sample is

a subset of individuals randomly selected by researchers to represent

an entire group as a whole. The goal is to get a sample of people that

is representative of the larger population.

INSTRUMENT USED

The researchers used the following tool in gathering the data needed:

PART 1 CONTAINS The DEMOGRAPHIC OF THE CO-

RESEARCHERS (AGE and SEX).

PART 2 CONTAINS The effects of introvert personality in the

The following procedures were followed during the

conduct of the study:

1. The researchers distributed the survey 50 randomly

selected HUMSS students of Metro Manila College. Due to the

fact Metro Manila is under community quarantine, the

researchers decided to distribute the questionnaire through

Google Forms, a web-based app used to create forms for data

collection purposes.

2. The administration, answering, and retrieval of the

questionnaire using Google Forms lasted for one week.

3. Once all the Google forms have been retrieved,

tabulation of the data was started.

QUESTIONNAIRE

A questionnaire is essential for gathering data for the

study. A well-organized questionnaire will have a significant impact on

the study because it provides accurate information about the co-

researcher’s experiences.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE QUESTIONNAIRES

The researchers read and researched some related

literature and studies to the study's subject. The study's cited issue

served as the basis for planning and drafting the questionnaire. In

order to enhance the way questions were constructed, discussions

with the research adviser and instructor were conducted. In order to

cover all aspects and specific questions raised by the problem

statement, researchers considered an enough number. The

instrument's questions were important and meaningful to the subject

matter, and they were clearly structured in such a way that the co-

researchers were well-prepared to answer them. The questionnaire

METRO MANILA COLLEGE

was then submitted to the editing and review consultant until its final

draft was reached.

VALIDATION OF INSTRUMENTS

The questionnaire that will made by the researchers will be

about The Introverted students. The questionnaire will consist of

thirty (30) questions. In order to do this, the researchers will conduct

a scratch sample, with the consent and approval of the coordinator

and the subject teacher.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The data gathered from questionnaire were tailed, tabulated

and subjected treatment for interpretation, validity and reliability….

DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the discussion, summary and

conclusion derived in the conduct of the study which is to probe on

the Introvert Students in a Sampled School in Quezon City A.Y. 2020-

2021. it is also provides recommendations that can pursued by the

future researchers.

The study was conducted at Metro Manila College. The

respondents were the grade 12 HUMSS students from section Rizal to

Aguinaldo. they were selected using purposive sampling. it employed

quantitative research and utilized descriptive method. pertinent data

were obtained thru a survey questionnaire that conducted in online

communication. the statistical used were frequency and percentage,

weighted mean and point Likert scale.

The purpose of this study was to determine the introvert

students in a sampled school in Quezon City. As a second aim of the

current study, the role of several other demographic factors in

METRO MANILA COLLEGE
48
Humanities and Social Sciences
determining the implications of introvert personality in class

participation, interaction and domestic environment was also

examined. This study also showed that the introvert students have a

possibility to excel in the HUMSS strand even now on the e-learning.

Learning Strategies in class participation according to Staff, 2021

Fortunately, online classes offer many ways to participate. Introverts

will exchange questions or comments through chat boxes, forums for

class conversation and email. Furthermore, online classes can

sometimes help introverts feel more comfortable than in-person

classes. Online classes are less fast-paced than in-person classes.

Therefore, online classes give students a longer time to process the

information they are learning. It has been proven that introverts

require more time to process their thoughts because they think greatly

before they speak. This slower-paced environment means that

introverts are actually given the time they need to think, making them

more likely to contribute to the conversation (Lynch, 2020).

Overall, Introversion in the field of humanities in social

sciences based on the outcome measures. after all, it is not quite

difficult for them to enter this type of strand they can participate,

interact and socialize as well as they can stand and keep, excel and

show elegance in class.

CONCLUSION

E-Learning is a great resource for helping introverted

students become more comfortable in the classroom and become

more confident in themselves. However, introvert students in sampled

school in Quezon City faces many experience and has affected their

academic performance. Experiencing struggles while studying gives

students low motivation, distraction, difficulty of concentrating and

lack of time management. Base on the information that we,

researchers gathered, it is advisable that Introvert needs more

assistance and understanding from their peers, acquaintance or even

in the society that they're living in. Our research study conveys

awareness and enlightenment about introversion. As some people

believed that introverts are just shy so they are isolating themselves,

but in our research, we proved that there are many factors and

various causes why they prefer to have some time alone.

RECOMMENDATION

If a study like this would be conducted, the group would

recommend other researchers use larger sample sizes. This would

help produce a more accurate result as more samples are used, thus

getting an input for a larger amount of the population. This also helps

in hypothesis testing. As the result of significance would be more

accurate. Additionally, the researchers would recommend others to

provide a more in-depth questionnaire so as to gain a more in-depth

input about the result. Also, based on the findings and conclusion

presented, the following recommendations are suggested:

INTROVERT PERSON/STUDENT

The researchers recommend that the introvert students must

understand what particularly overstimulates to them, for instance

being interrupted and asked to make decisions while you're

concentrating, noisy environments, turning on and off from being in

social mode, group socializing or group meetings, and replying to

people on social media.

METRO MANILA COLLEGE
