Introduction
Avaleha or Lehyam is one of the forms of Ayurvedic medicine which is semi-solid in consistency. It is
prepared from mentioned drugs or herbs with the addition of Gur (jaggery), Sharkara (sugar or sugar
candy) and boiled with prescribed Swarasa (drug juice) or Kwatha/ Kashayam (decoction).

Synonyms of avaleha
Avaleha is also termed as Modaka, Guda, Khanda, Rasayana, Leha, Lehyam etc.

In all types of Avaleha preparations, there generally have following ingredients –

1. Kashaya (decoctions or other liquids)


2. Gur/ Guda/ Sharkara (Jaggery, sugar or sugar candy)
3. Churna (Powders or pulps of certain drugs)
4. Ghrita (Ghee) or Tailam (oil)
5. Madhu (honey).

Avaleha default quantities :


Samanya procedure of preparation of avaleha
 First, Gur/ Guda/ Sharkara (Jaggery, sugar or sugar candy) is dissolved well in the decoction or
liquid and strained to remove the foreign particles.
 This solution is then boiled over a moderate fire.
 When the Paka (Phanita) is tantuvat (thread like) when pressed between thumb and index finger
or when it sinks down in a glass of water without getting easily dissolved, it should be removed
from the fire.
 Churna (fine powders) of herbs are then added in small quantities and stirred continuously and
vigorously to form a homogenous mixture.
 Ghita (Ghee) or Taila (oil), if mentioned, is added while the preparation is somewhat hot and
mixed well.
 Madhu (honey), if mentioned is added at the last when the mixture or preparation is cool and
mixed well.
 Churna (fine powders) of herbs are then added in small quantities and stirred continuously and

 Ghita (Ghee) or Taila (oil), if mentioned, is added while the preparation is somewhat hot and
mixed well.
 Madhu (honey), if mentioned is added at the last when the mixture or preparation is cool and

PROPERTIES SIGNIFYING AVALEHA IS PROPERLY PREPARED


The Avaleha or Lehyam should neither be hard nor be a thick fluid.
When pulp of the raw herbs is added and ghee or oil is present in the preparation, this can be rolled
between the fingers.
The growth of fungus over it or fermentation is signs of deterioration.
When metals are mentioned in the formula, the bhasmas of the metals are used.
In the case of specific drugs like Bhallataka, Vatsanabha etc. purified drugs alone are included in the
preparation.

Anupan of avleha
Vyagri haritaki
Vyaghri Haritaki Avaleha is poly-herbal Ayurvedic medicine. It is a blackish brown, semi-solid
sticky paste with bitter (tikta), astringent (kashay) taste and spicy (katu) pleasant odor.

The medicinal herbs used in its preparation are Kantakari, Haritaki, Trikatu and Chaturjat
churna.

Method of preparation adopted as standard procedure from Sharangdhara


Samhita Madhyama Khanda [7]

This medicine is indicated in respiratory ailments. It especially useful in diseases that occur due
to vitiation of Kapha and Vata.

The main ingredients of this medicine are Vyaghri and Haritaki. Vyaghri is Ayurvedic name of
medicinal herb Kantakari
Kantakari is used in treatment of respiratory ailments from time immemorial. This herb is used
to loosen the cough and treat diseases of throat.
Trikatu (Kali mirch, Pippali and Sunth) has antibacterial action and beneficial in treatment of
fever, asthma, cold, cough and other general health disorders.
Chaturjata is Ayurvedic formulation containing dalchini, elaichi, tejpatra and kesara. It is used
for improving appetite, promoting digestion, and treating cough.

Uses of Vyaghri Haritaki Avaleha

 All varieties of cough (vaataj, pittaj and kaphaja)


 Chronic Bronchitis, Asthma
 Cough, coryza
 Aphasia, hoarseness of voice
 Chronic rhinitis or sinusitis
 Tuberculosis
 Constipation
Dosage of Vyaghri Haritaki Avaleha
 5 –10 g once or twice a day before or after food or as directed by Ayurvedic doctor.
 Dosage for children below 5 years of age – 1 – 2 grams, once or twice a day, along with a
teaspoon of honey or warm water / milk.
 Dosage for children between 5 – 12 years of age – 5 grams once or twice a day along with a
teaspoon of honey or warm water / milk.

Packaging of avleha
Pack it in tightly closed containers to protect from light and moisture.The Avaleha or Lehyam should be
kept in glass or porcelain jars. It can also be kept in a metal container or pet bottles which do not react
with it.

Shelf Life:
3 years from the date of manufacture. if you have opened the seal of the bottle,
better to use it before 3 months.

A deep bottom vessel Muslin cloth

Stove Spatula

Method of preparation
1. We prepared the kwath of kantakari along with haritaki tied in a pottali.

2. Later after the kwath was prepared we remove the pottali containing haritaki and let it cool by
itself. After it cooled down, we deseeded the haritaki. And strained the kwath for liquid part.

3. We boiled the kwath on mandagni along with the deseeded haritaki and added jaggery to it to
form gudapaka.
4. After proper guda paka was prepared and it cooled down by itself we added all the prakshepaka
dravya one by one while stirring thoroughly .Honey was added last to the mixture.

5. Then the vyaghri haritaki avaleha is stored in cool place and packed.

Observation and results


Avleha pariksha
1. Vyaghri haritaki avleha looks like chavanprash

2. Brown coloured ardhapravahi avleha is formed.

3. The avleha is kashay rasatmak

Conclusion
1. We understood the pharmaceutical procedure of preparing vyaghri
haritaki.
