Jim Biss – Without Limits – The Ultimate Icon
Written by Lee Fribbins – Editor of The Racing Pigeon, Racing Pictorial OTHER BOOKS IN THE
WITHOUT LIMITS SERIES
International
Jim Biss was one of if not the greatest fanciers to have ever graced
our shores. The sport of pigeon racing in the UK had in Jim Biss an
extraordinary talent that made him certainly one of the Ultimate Icons
WITHOUT
LIMITS
of his generation but also one of the greatest exponents in Europe of
all time. Jim was one of those fanciers that didn’t just get a
performance a season that for many would be once in a life time that
those fanciers would be proud of but created a team of pigeons that
achieved results many could only dream of on a week after week
basis and season after season.

In this book I take a look at Jim’s life, his racing methods, his lofts and the infamous pigeons that
made him a household name with descendants of his fine team still winning around the world today.
A true gentleman and Icon of the sport.

How do you select the pigeons

that you will send for the next
race, blood spot, apple bodied,
grease spot etc?
Observation around the loft is more
important than blood or grease spots
in my opinion. I like birds that can’t sit
still or the complete opposite, birds
that you don’t see or hear. The birds
that self motivate themselves are the
ones we want.

What signs do you look for that a

pigeon should be stopped racing?
If I have a decent pigeon that is starting
to come late regularly, I will stop it
immediately. Sometimes pigeons may
be injured or mentally affected in some
way and we can’t see this. It’s better to
put them aside for the year and
concentrate in getting them through a
good moult.

been instrumental in helping Luc answer my questions in
order to enable me to pen this article for which I am
grateful as she not only provided me with the majority of
the photographs but, also outlined their system with
young bird racing. Also clarifying a few points which
otherwise may have been lost in translation. The breeding
takes place in winter with 25 pairs, 16 in the bigger of the
two lofts and nine in the smaller loft, approximately 50
are reared with one round being taken from the 16 pairs.
Once the youngsters from the 16 are old enough the
parents are moved to an aviary, because the loft is
needed for the young birds. Remember space is at
premium here in Hallaar. Only the first round is raced.

The period from 1st March until 15th May the young
pigeons are placed on the Darkness system between the
hours 6pm – 8am. After coming off Darkness the cocks

In each nation where pigeon racing is
found there are always slight
variations in terms of how the
competitions are structured. For
example some countries allow old

together in the same race, while some
only have one young bird race. As

Andy and Colin first raced together in

they had a very good blue cock who won

recorded a velocity of 1002ypm. This
pigeon was then sold at their clearance

Colin MacGregor and this wonderful pigeon won over

wonderful stock pigeon and was sire and grand sire of

to go back together into the pigeons and hopefully and

of building a team of birds to compete at the highest
