Stage 1: Preparation before the class
• Ask: What kind of shops can you find in a shopping centre or a department store? What other services are there? Write
the answers on the board.
• Tell students they are going to design a shopping centre and make an advert for it. Ask them to research
shopping centres in the UK on the internet. Tell them to bring their notes and some pictures to the next class.
• Each group will need a large piece of card, scissors and some coloured pens.
Stage 2: Procedure in the class
• Divide students into small groups of three or four. Ask them to move their desks together, if possible.
• Ask students to take out their research about a shopping centre.
• Ask them to present their research to their group.
• Explain that the students must now design their own shopping centre using their research for ideas.
• Tell students to make an advert for their shopping centre. They should also think of a name for it.
• Ask each group to present their advert. Finally, have a class vote on the best advert.
