Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This project allows students multiple means of expression and representation and expression by allowing for
complete creative and individual input in creating a brochure. Multiple means of engagement are allowed in
that students are given the freedom to choose what type of location they attend and learn about.

Lesson idea implementation:

The teacher will start this lesson by introducing what the students will be doing on their own. The teacher
tells students that they will be choosing a place based around any Asian culture to go to with their parents.
Then the teacher tells them what they will be doing first. Students will first review the different Asian cultures
we went over in class to get an idea of what they would be interested to see more of. Then, with the
teacher’s help, they will Google search for cultural events/places near them of the culture they are most
interested to see more of.

They will then select 2-3 places, and, with the teacher’s approval, they will then see if their parents will take
them to one of them. If the parent does take them, the student will create a brochure that captures what
they experienced and learned about the cultural place/event. If the parent will not take them, the student will
create a brochure of any cultural event/place within the US that they research. Then the teacher will scan
their brochures and publish them to the Global Schoolhouse International Schools CyberFair. Then, the
teacher will show the class each student’s submission in the class on the website. While the lesson
introduction will only take 5 minutes, the time the student spends doing these things will likely take about 3
hours over a 2-week period. The student will receive a completion grade. Learning is differentiated due to
student choice in what they choose to make their brochure on and how they design it.
Reflective Practice:
Student learning is greatly impacted as students are physically brought into the experience of an Asian
culture. The lesson could be further extended with a sharing session in which students talk to each other
about their experiences. A technology tool that could further enhance this project is Yelp. Using Yelp reviews

of prospective places, students could get a better idea of where they would like to go. They could even post
their own review of the place they go afterwards.
