COMPUTATIONS for Work:

III. QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS:

SHOW YOUR COMPLETE SOLUTIONS BELOW (IMAGE OR ENCODED), USE 4 DECIMAL PLACES:

1. Define the following terms:

a. elasticity - the ability of an object or material to resume its normal shape after being stretched or
compressed; stretchiness. - websters dictionary

b. strain - a force tending to pull or stretch something to an extreme or damaging degree. websters
dictionary

c. stress- in physical sciences and engineering, force per unit area within materials that arises
from externally applied forces, uneven heating, or permanent deformation and that permits an
accurate description and prediction of elastic, plastic, and fluid behaviour. A stress is expressed as
a quotient of a force divided by an area. – Britannica

2. State Hooke’s Law of Elasticity

Hooke’s law is derived from empirical or observation. It states that for elastic deformation in a
spring the deforming force is proportional to the change in length.

EXPERIMENT 6: HOOKE’S LAW OF ELASTICITY

3. A cylindrical spring is found to elongate by 3 cm when stretched by a force of

500N. Determine: a) its force constant 3 x 500n =1500 constant force

b) the work done by a 600N force in elongating the spring
