Activity #2: Differentiate an artery from a vein (gross & histologically) Gross Arteries transport blood away from the heart, while veins transport blood towards the heart. Aside from pulmonary blood vessels, arteries transport oxygenated blood while veins transport deoxygenated blood. Arteries have thick muscle-filled walls. Veins have thinner walls than arteries and use valves to keep blood flowing. Histologically All three tunics found in arteries are present in veins. When compared to arteries of roughly the same size, the tunica media in veins is significantly thinner. Furthermore, veins have a larger lumen than arteries, which allows them to accommodate lower blood pressure.
