Some of the cash was taken from Calderdale Credit Union – a service that helps
the poorest people in the district.
“It really is wicked,” said chairwoman of the credit union Frances Burns. “It’s like
breaking into your neighbour’s house and stealing their Christmas presents.”
Thieves smashed their way into the credit union’s offices in Northgate, Halifax
town centre in the early hours of Monday and broke into the safe.
Staff at the service discovered the theft when they went to work on Monday
morning.
Mrs Burns said the culprits had tried to break in at the back of the building, failed,
and then smashed the glass window at the bottom of the door at the front.
Files had been scattered across the office and the safe ransacked. The offices
had to close on Monday morning while police carried out forensic investigations
and more money was obtained, but they were able to re-open by the afternoon.
Mrs Burns said they were now stepping up their security. She reassured people
who use the service that their money is safe. The other raid happened at the
Hairy Lemon bar in Lord Street, Halifax.
Thieves are thought to have stolen thousands from a safe sometime between
Saturday and Monday.
Earlier this month thieves broke into the Helping Hands charity shop in
Northgate, close to Calderdale Credit Union.
Mrs. Burns azt állította, hogy a tettesek előbb az épület hátsó része felől
kísérelték meg a behatolást, ami nem sikerült, és végül a bejárati ajtó alsó
részén törték be az üvegablakot.
