WALKWAYS AND
PASSAGEWAYS

Walkways should have a maximum


cross gradient of 1:100.

Walkways should have a minimum


width of 1.20 meters.

In lengthy/busy walkways, spaces


should be provided at some point
along the route so that a wheelchair
may pass another or turn around.

Minimum dimension of 1.50 m and a


maximum distance of 12:00 m
between stops.

STAIRS

HANDRAILS

Handrail shall be installed at 0.90 m and


0.70 m above steps or ramps. Handrails
for protection at great heights may be
installed at 1.0 m to 1.06 m.

0.30 m long extension of the handrail


should be provided at the start and end
of ramps and stairs.

Handrails that require full grip should


have a dimension of 30 mm to 50 mm.

Handrails attached to walls should have


a clearance no less than 50 mm from

the wall. Handrails on ledges should


have a clearance not less than 40 mm.

SIGNAGES

Signs should be kept simple and easy


to understand.

The sign should have minimum


headroom of 2.0 meters should be
provided.

Signs on walls and doors should be


located at a maximum height of 1.60
M. and a minimum height of 1.40
meters.

Signages labeling public rooms and


places should have raised symbols,
letters or numbers with the minimum
height of 1 mm.

CROSSINGS
The width of the roadway to be
traversed exceeds 10 m, construct
central refuges with a depth of at least
1.5 m and ideally 2 m as a mid-crossing
shelter.

PARKING AREAS

Parking spaces for the disabled should


allow enough space for a person to
transfer to a wheelchair from a vehicle.

Accessible parking slots should have a


minimum width of 3.70 m.

A walkway from accessible spaces of


1.20 m. clear width shall be provided
between the front ends of parked cars.

ENTRANCE

In case entrances are not on the same


level of the site arrival grade, ramps
should be provided as access to the
entrance level (depends, if possible)

Entrances with vestibules shall be


provided a level area with at least a 1.80
m. depth and a 1.50 m. width.

RAMPS

Ramp shall have a minimum clear width


of 1.20 m

The maximum gradient shall be 1:12.

The length of a ramp should not exceed


6:00 m. if the gradient is 1:12, longer
ramps whose gradient is 1:12 shall be
provided with landings not less than
1.50 m.

A level area not less than 1.80 m.

Handrails will be provided on both sides

Manual switches shall be positioned


within 1.20 m to 1.30 m above the
floor.

Manual switches should be located no


further than 0.20 from the latch side of
the door.

CORRIDORS
Corridors shall have minimum clear
width of 1.20 meters.
Recesses or turnabout spaces should
be provided for wheelchairs to turn
around or to enable another wheelchair
to pass; these spaces shall have a
minimum area of 1.50 m x 1.50 m. and
shall be spaced at a maximum of 12.00
m.

Every dead end is 3.50 m turnabout

WASHROOMS &
TOILETS

Accessible water closet stalls shall have


a minimum area of 1.70 x 1.80 mts.

A turning space of 2.25 sqm with a


minimum dimension of 1.50 m.

In order to aid visually impaired persons


to readily determine whether a
washroom is for men or for women, the
signage for men's washroom door shall
be an equilateral triangle with a vertex
pointing upward, and those for women

shall be a circle, the edges of the


triangle should be 0.30 m long as

strips so as not to cause accidents.

depends on the number of steps and

ELEVATORS

Accessible elevators should be


located not more than 30.00 m.

other, shall be provided for.

Each floor or fire section of


the building.

2. Minimum Number of Exits

● Every room or space with a


capacity of fifty (50) or more
persons or over ninety-three
square meters.

diagnostic and treatment rooms or
areas such as X-rays, surgery and
physical therapy.

3. The single door may be used as a


horizontal exit if it serves one direction.

VENTILATION
Ventilation must be given that is both
effective and appropriate for
maintaining a comfortable environment.

The ventilation system must be


adequate to prevent excessive heating
of the air, condensation, and the
production of excess moisture on walls
and ceilings, as well as the removal of
noxious aromas, fumes, and
contaminants.

Mechanical ventilation with airflow from


a clean region and discharging in such
a way as not to generate a nuisance
shall be supplied in the absence of
effective natural ventilation.

In special instances, canopies, air


ducts, fans, or other appliances must be
installed as needed by the health
authority.

REQUIRED FLOOR
TYPE
All angles between the floors and walls
shall be rounded off to a height of not
less than 3 inches (7.62 cm.) from the
floor; or constructed of concrete or other
impervious and readily cleaned material
that is resistant to wear and corrosion
and is suitably graded and drained.

Appropriate materials for flooring must


be selected to ensure optimal durability
without generating a slippery surface.

REQUIRED WALL
TYPE
The wall and ceiling finishes should be
chosen to provide the best lighting with

the least amount of glare. In the darkest


corner, artificial lighting with louvered
fluorescent or incandescent fixtures
must be utilized to provide a minimum
lighting of 25 foot-candles. Appropriate
materials for flooring must be selected
to ensure optimal durability without
generating a slippery surface.

Where walls are wet or splashed, they


must be made of impervious, non-
absorbent materials that reach a height
of at least 79 inches (2 meters) from the
floor.
iii. Internal walls must be painted light
colors or coated with whatever other
wall finish the health authority specifies.

TYPE
All ceilings, or the entire underside of
the roof if no ceiling is supplied, must
be dust-proof and washable.
Smooth, non-absorbent, and bright
should be the ceiling or undersurface
of the roof of rooms where food is
made or packed, or where utensils or
hands are washed.

The floors and walls shall be made of
concrete or other durable impervious
materials.
