1. Differentiate essay type of test and multiple choice type of test and why is the essay type
called subjective test and multiple choice is called objective test.
Answer : Multiple-choice and essay tests are the typical test formats used to measure
student understanding of economics in college courses. Each type has its features. A
multiple- choice (or fixed-response) format allows for a wider sampling of the content
because more questions can be given in a testing period. Multiple-choice tests also offer
greater efficiency and reliability in scoring than an essay. The major disadvantage of a
multiple-choice item is that the fixed responses tend to emphasize recall and encourage
guessing. Multiple-choice items are all receptive, or selective, response items in that the
test-taker chooses from a set of responses (commonly called a supply type of response)
rather than creating a response. Other receptive item types include true-false questions and
matching lists.
- In an essay (or constructed- response) test, students generate responses that have the
potential to show originality and a greater depth of understanding of the topic. The
essay also provides a written record for assessing the thought processes of the student
why is the essay type called subjective test ? Because we know the subjective test is
said to require scoring by opiniated judgment hopefully based on insight and expertise.
on the part of the scorer. And Subjective tests aim to assess areas of students’
performance that are complex and qualitative, using questioning which may have more
than one correct answer or more ways to express it. Also there are Subjective Tests
Characteristics: Subjective items are generally easier and less time consuming to
construct than are most objective test items, Different readers can rate identical
responses differently, the same reader can rate the same paper differently over time.
(That refers to essay test)
And Why multiple choice is called objective test? Because Objective tests aim to assess
a specific part of the learner’s knowledge using questions which have a single correct
answer.( that refers to multiple choice) and also the characteristics of objective test
There are :They are so definite and so clear that a single, definite answer is expected,
They ensure perfect objectivity in scoring, It can be scored objectively and easily and It
takes less time to answer than an essay test.
2. Suppose you have tried out a test to 50 students and you got various results recorded.
a. Put the results as the followings:
b. Judge the items that safely used in the future
Answer: items 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,10

c. Give reasons why is or isn’t safely used in the future.

Answer: why is it safe to use in the future? because these items have good IF and ID.
because to determine safely used an item make sure the item has a good IF and ID.
IF between 25%-75% it means the item is good, and if the ID is above 0.40 it means the
item is good.

3. TOEFL is commonly called “ standardized test” do you or don’t you agree? Why?
Answer: I Agree Because English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL ), intended to be
administered to large aud ences, with results efficiently disseminated to test-takers. Such
tests must have fixec predetermined responses in a format that can be scored quickly at
minimun expense. Money and efficiency are primary concerns in these tests. And we know
that TOEFL is a standardized test that measures the English-language ability of a non-native
speaker who wishes to enroll in English-speaking universities. In assessing a person’s ability
to understand the English language, it tests a student’s skills in the areas of reading,
speaking, listening, and writing. A standardized test is any form of test that (1) requires all
test takers to answer the same questions, or a selection of questions from common bank of
questions, in the same way, and that (2) is scored in a “standard” or consistent manner,
which makes it possible to compare the relative performance of individual students or
groups of students. therefore I agree if TOEFL Is commonly called “standardized test”
4. One alternative in assessment is self - assessment and peer-assessment. what are the
advantages and disadvantages of these alternatives?
Answer:
Self assessment
 Advantages:
- Encourages student involvement and responsibility.
- Encourages students to reflect on their role and contribution to the process of the group
work.
- Allows students to see and reflect on their peers’ assessment of their contribution.
- Focuses on the development of student’s judgment skills.
 Disadvantages:
- Potentially increases lecturer workload by needing to brief students on the process as
well as on-going guidance on performing self evaluation.
- Self evaluation has a risk of being perceived as a process of presenting inflated grades
and being unreliable.
- Students feel ill equipped to undertake the assessment.
Peer assessment
 Advantages:
- Agreed marking criteria means there can be little confusion about assignment outcomes
and expectations.
- Encourages student involvement and responsibility.
- Encourages students to reflect on their role and contribution to the process of the group
work.
- Focuses on the development of student’s judgment skills.
- Students are involved in the process and are encouraged to take part ownership of this
process.
- Provides more relevant feedback to students as it is generated by their peers.
- It is considered fair by some students, because each student is judged on their own
contribution.
- When operating successfully can reduce a lecturer's marking load.
- Can help reduce the ‘free rider’ problem as students are aware that theircontribution
will be graded by their peers.
 Disadvantages:
- Additional briefing time can increase a lecturer’s workload.
- The process has a degree of risk with respect to reliability of grades as peer pressure to
apply elevated grades or friendships may influence the assessment, though this can be
reduced if students can submit their assessments independent of the group.
- Students will have a tendency to award everyone the same mark.
- Students feel ill equipped to undertake the assessment.
- Students may be reluctant to make judgements regarding their peers.
- At the other extreme students may be discriminated against if students ‘gang up’ against
one group member
