Teacher Candidate’s Name: Emma Murphy

Date Created: 21 September 2021

Content Area: Mathematics

School: Siena Heights University

Grade Level: 3rd grade

Unit Title: The shape of you

Total Time/Frequency and Duration of Lessons: 3/30 minute

Michigan Academic Standards comprehensive of the unit: (include code and standard)
(Example: ELA.S.5.1a Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required
material; explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to
explore ideas under discussion.)

1. MAT.3.G.1 Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses,

rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the
shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize
rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw
examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

Performance Based Learning Objectives comprehensive of the unit:

 Learners will be able to …
 Performance based – conditions, target behavior, and criteria
 Aligned with Michigan Academic Standard(s)
(Example: Given two hours of instruction daily for five school days, learners will be able
to accurately play a new song on their individual musical instrument with five or fewer
errors.)

 Learners will be able to categorize different shapes and be able to identify the
attributes of the shape.
 Will be able to recognize rhombus, rectangle, and squares and that they are
examples of quadrilaterals.

Guiding Questions:
 Are open-ended
 Require higher-level thinking
 Support key concepts

1
 Why are there different shapes in the classroom?
 Why is it important to learn about shapes?
 What would everything look like if it was the same shape?

Knowledge of Students:
 What do you know about the students for whom the unit was designed including their
backgrounds, cultures, skills, language proficiency, interests, special needs, and
approaches to learning?
 How do you know about your students?
 How has your knowledge of your students shaped this unit plan?

 Go over accommodations and IEP, then see what the student needs to be
successful.
 Can they indefinity the difference between shapes.
 Indefinity what students know before the lesson when doing a formative
assessment.
 Do the students know what a quadrilateral is?

Bibliography of Resources:
 Teacher research/planning
 Source of learning materials
 Includes web sites, textbooks, literature sources, relevant journal articles, etc.
 In APA format
