Ls. 3.

6 CONSERVATION

Text book Exercise[Pg.48&49]

Q1: What is conservation?

Ans 1: Conservation means taking care of the environment, and helping other
kinds of living organisms to survive.

Q2. Explain how the landfill site helps wildlife to survive?

Ans 2:

* Pollutants cannot escape through the waterproof liner, so animals living near the
site will not be harmed by them.

* Water from the site is treated to make it safe.

* Soil and grass cover the rubbish, preventing most animals from coming into
contact with it.

Q3. Describe two reasons why we should try not to cut down forests.

Ans 3: Cutting down forests destroys the habitats for which plants and animals are
adapted, so they may die or have to move to another place. If the trees are burnt,
this will add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, which may make the Earth get
warmer. Trees also take carbon dioxide from the air to use in photosynthesis, so
fewer trees can also mean that there is more carbon dioxide in the air.
Exercise 3.6 Conserving giant pandas
WORKBOOK [Pg.32,33]
Ans 1: Sun → bamboo → giant panda
Ans 2: They have a sixth finger, which helps them to hold bamboo as they eat it.
They have a large head with strong jaw muscles, to help them to chew the tough
bamboo

They have very big molar teeth, to help to crush the tough bamboo

Ans 3: Large areas of bamboo forests, which are the habitat of giant pandas, have
been destroyed. Giant pandas are adapted to live in this habitat, and cannot live in
other types of habitat.

Ans 4: Tourists could pay to visit reserves where giant pandas live. The money
could help to pay for the upkeep of the reserve.
