Concrete Design Mix (Traditional Method)

Dtermine the uncorrected and corrected weights based on the following data:

A.Fine Aggregates - Natural

Fineness modulus = 2.90
Spec.Gravity(SSD) = 2.61
Moisture Content,% = 0.00
Absorption,% = 1.63

B.Coarse Aggregates - Angular

Maximum size,mm = 25.00
Spec.Gravity(SSD) = 2.81
Moisture Content,% = 1.20
Absorption,% = 0.74

C.Class of Concrete = Structural

D.Cement Factor = 9.10 bags/cu.m.

E.Slump,mm = 76.20

F.Spec. Gravity of Cement = 3.15

G.Flexural Strength,Mpa = 20.70

STEP 1: Collection of Data (As given)

Step 2: Compute for Absolute Volume:

a)Absolute Volume of Concrete = 1 / Cement Factor = 1/ 9.10

Abs. Vol. of Concrete = 0.10989011 cu.m (as much as possible round off
to 5 decimal places)

b)Absolute Volume of Cement =( 40 kg / 3.15 ) /1000 kg/cu.m

Abs. Vol. of Cement = 0.01270 cu.m (as much as possible round off
to 5 decimal places)

c)Absolute Volume of Water (Refer to table V.)

Net Water,kg = 192.00 (base max size of coarse aggregate)
Absolute Volume of Water =( 192 kg / Cement Factor ) /1000 kg/cu.m
Abs. Vol. of Water = 0.02110 cu.m (as much as possible round off
to 5 decimal places)
d)Absolute Volume of Water and Cement = 0.02110 + 0.01270
Abs. Volume of Water and Cement = 0.03380 cu.m (as much as possible
round off to 5 decimal places)

e)Abs. Vol. of Coarse and Fine Aggregates= Abs. Vol. of Concrete

- Abs. Vol. of Cement and Water
Abs. Vol. of Coarse and Fine Aggregates= 0.10989 - 0.03380
Abs. Vol. of Coarse and Fine Aggregates= 0.07609

From Table V,% Sand = 46.00

f)Abs. Vol. of Fine Aggregates= % in table V x Abs. Vol. of Coarse and Fine Agg.
46.00 % x 0.07609
Abs. Vol. of Fine Aggregates= 0.03500
Step 3 Determine Water-Cement Ratio
Water-Cement Ratio =Net Wt. of Water from Table V / (Cement Factor x 40 kg/bag)
Water-Cement Ratio ,W/C= 192.00 / 9.10 x 40
Water-Cement Ratio ,W/C= 0.53

Step 4 Adjust Mix Proportions

In table V,it says that…..
Based on mix having a water-cement ratio of 0.57 by weight of 22.8 liters
per sack of cement,76.22mm slump and natural sand having fineness modulus of 2.75.

So to adjust the mix proportions…

W 0.53 - 0.57
= (1%)
C 0.05
= -0.008
= -0.80 %

2.90 - 2.75
FM = (0.5%)
0.1
= 0.0075
= 0.75 %

Total Adjustments = -0.80 + 0.75 = -0.05

Adjusted,% Sand = 46.00 + -0.05 = 45.95 %

Abs. Vol. of Fine Aggregates= % in table V x Abs. Vol. of Coarse and Fine Agg.
45.95 % x 0.07609
Abs. Vol. of Fine Aggregates= 0.03496 cu.m.
Absolute Vol. of Coarse Aggregates = 0.07609 - 0.03496
Absolute Vol. of Coarse Aggregates = 0.04113 cu.m
Uncorrected Weight of Fine Aggregates = 0.03496 x Sp.Gr x 1000kg/cu.m
= 0.03496 x 2.61 x 1000
Uncorrected Weight of Fine Aggregates = 91.26 kg

Uncorrected Weight of Coarse Aggregates = 0.04113 x Sp.Gr x 1000kg/cu.m

= 0.04113 x 2.81 x 1000
Uncorrected Weight of Coarse Aggregates = 115.57 kg

Corrected Fine Aggregate = Uncorrected Wt. ( 1 + (MC - Absorption)/100)

Corrected Fine Aggregate = 91.26 ( 1 + (0 - 1.63)/100)
Corrected Fine Aggregate = 89.77 kg

Corrected Coarse Aggregate = Uncorrected Wt. ( 1 + (MC - Absorption)/100)

Corrected Coarse Aggregate = 115.57. ( 1 + (1.2- 0.74)/100)
Corrected Coarse Aggregate = 116.10 kg

Corrected Water = Uncorrected Wt. of( water+ FA + CA) -Corrected Wt. of (FA+CA)
Corrected Water = 22.05

Abs. Vol SG Uncorrected Wt(kg) Corrected Wt(kg)

Cement 0.01270 3.15 40 40
Water 0.02110 1 21.10 22.05
FA 0.03496 2.61 91.26 89.77
CA 0.04113 2.81 115.57 116.10

Step 5: Calculate Volume of Mold

Volume of Mold(Cylinder) = ∏ r2 h = 339.2928 cu.in
6" dia by 12" height 0.0056 cu.m

Volume of 1 cylinder specimen with 25% volume allowance

Volume = 0.0056 x (1+0.25) = 0.007 cu.m.

Step 6: Compute for Batch Weights

Batch Weight = CF x Volume

Let K = Constant = Cement Factor x Volume = 9.1 x 0.007 = 0.0637

Cement = K x 40 = 2.55 kg
Fine Agg = K x 89.77 = 5.72 kg
Coarse Agg = K x 116.10 = 7.40 kg
Water = K x 22.0548 = 1.40 kg
