Aeration / Degassing
Fishfarm Water
In connection with using BIO-BLOK® elements for biological treatment of fishfarm water, it has been
proven that BIO-BLOK® elements in smooth version (BIO-BLOK® 80 HD G or BIO-BLOK® 100 HD G)
are extremely well suited in systems for aeration of fishfarm water.
Fields of application are all places where a free fall is available (minimum 20-30cm), or where the
water is being lifted by a pump (e.g. by return pumping).
The conditions of a good result with use of BIO-BLOK® 80 HD G or BIO-BLOK® 100 HD G are simple
as the best result is achieved by a good distribution of the water through the BIO-BLOK® elements. In
this way the water is “broken” most possible and the biggest possible contact to the oxygen of the air
is achieved. At the same time, the gasses in the water, if any, are effectively aired.
The water can be spread over the BIO-BLOK® elements through e.g. a perforated box of stainless
steel, plastic or the like. Depending on the volume of water, the holes should be 4 to 8 mm in diameter
at intervals of approx. 5 cm between the holes. The box has to be constructed in such a way that it is
possible to clean the holes as they in time will clog up. Keeping the filter in the shade will prevent alga
formation, and thus the work with cleaning of the filter is reduced. The cleaner a filter can be kept, the
more efficient the filter functions.

BIO-BLOK® 80 HD G or BIO-BLOK® 100 HD G for aeration of fishfarm water has the following qualities:
BIO-BLOK® 80 HD G and BIO-BLOK® 100 HD G are available in heights (lengths of block tubes) from
40 to 120 cm.
Depending on above factors, it is possible to achieve oxygen saturation in the water of approx. 90-95%
with the following dimension criteria:
However, there are some basic data of experience which are applied when dimensioning these plants.
As CO2 is readily soluble in water the filter is of course higher than the BIO-BLOK® filters which are only
used for oxidation of water.
The minimum height of a BIO-BLOK® trickling filter for degassing of CO2 is 80cm. Two BIO-BLOK® 80
HD G units, 54 x 54 x 55cm, or BIO-BLOK® 100 HD G, 55 x 55 x 55cm, are recommended
corresponding to a total height of 108cm or 110cm respectively.
If the degassing plant is not placed in free air, an air blower is required which is removing the degassed
CO2. A blower used as injection ventilation gives the best result.
