Note on learning to spell

Learning spellings is an important first step in getting

children to start reading.

Before a child learns to spell, it is important for the child

to know letter sounds. Help your child go through all the
alphabets and practice the sound each letter makes.

Once the child can identify letter sounds, you can

introduce your child to three letter words.

It may be better to start with simple words which are in

the CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) format. These
type of words, (for example, “cat”, “sit” and “leg”), are
usually the first used to teach children to “sound out”
words.

Let your child practice these initial spellings a lot, till they
get more confident identifying the letter sounds and
blending them to form words. It is best to make spelling
practice fun, by teaching through games and rhymes.

Once the child is comfortable with an initial vocabulary of

3 letter words, introduce some more 3 letter words and
simple 4 letter words.

As a next step introduce your child to “sight words”.

These are basic words such as “that”, “the” and “why”
which are not so easily sounded out and so instead
children are taught to recognize the word as a whole.

With regular practice, your child will soon be ready to

read simple stories.
