TOPIC: A NEWSPAPER HEADLINE ABOUT A POPULAR MUSICIAN (Reading Skills Activity)

Lead-in – 5 minutes
Teacher gives handouts of pictures of some popular musicians to the group leaders.
Ask the groups to discuss about their favorite musician from among these pictures. The
leader of every group should ensure that all the members of the group are given the turn to
speak about this.

Pre-teach vocabulary-
Teacher gives handouts of some difficult vocabulary they may find in the newspaper article.
Examples of some words could include- ‘Musical’, ‘Genre’, ‘Pop music’, ‘Rapid’,
‘Phenomenon’, ‘Impression’, ‘Influence’ etc.

Activity- 10 minutes
The handout is given to the group leaders and the teacher asks the group to discuss among
themselves, what these words could mean. (Eliciting the language)

Then, the teacher takes feedback from the group leaders on whether the members of their
respective groups were able to guess the meanings of these words.

Teacher explains vocabulary on the board- 10 minutes

The teacher then addresses the entire class as a whole and explains the meaning of all the
difficult vocabulary.

Predictive Activity- 5 minutes

The teacher then asks the groups to discuss among themselves, any other words similar to
the taught vocabulary.

Reading for gist- 10 minutes

The teacher gives out the handouts of the article, to the group leaders and asks them to be
distributed to all members of their groups. The groups are now supposed to read the article
and a) verify if any of their predicted vocabulary shows up in the article and b) get a general
idea of the content in the article. The students need to come up with a title for the article
based on the gist of it.

Teacher then collects the feedback from all the group leaders about the titles they all came
up with and writes down these titles on the board for the class to see (This is done to
encourage the expression of all groups’ ideas to the entire class).

Reading for specific information- 15 minutes

The teacher gives out handouts of some specific questions related to the article, to the
group leaders and asks them to be distributed to all members of their groups. The groups
are now supposed to come up with the answers to these questions by discussing with other
students in their groups.

Teacher then collects the feedback from all the group leaders about the answers they all
came up with and writes down these answers on the board for the class to see (This is done
so that all the students of all groups can check their answers by looking at the board).

Follow-up- 5 minutes
For the follow up activity, the teacher gives a writing task homework to all the students. The
task is- write 10 sentences about your personal favorite musician. What kind of music do
they play, why do you like their music, how often do you listen to their music etc.
