Work to be done in the register

• A clause is a group of words that contains a verb and a subject of its own . It
can be a part of the sentence or a sentence by itself

Example:

• I am working .
• If we finish our work , we can go to play.

Main clause/Independent clause – makes complete sense on their own.

Subordinate / Dependent Clause – cannot make complete sense on their own.


Dependent on the main clause to make their meaning complete.

Examples:

• I sat on a chair, which was close to my study table.

Main clause – I sat on a chair

Subordinate clause – which was close to my study table

• I am reading a book , that I borrowed from the library

Main clause – I am reading a book

Subordinate Clause – that I borrowed from the library

Noun Clause – acts as a noun in a sentence . ( answers the question what)

(1) I don’t know when the show will begin


Main clause – I don’t know
Subordinate – when the show will begin
(2) That the task was left incomplete is obvious at this point.
Main Clause – is obvious at this point
Subordinate Clause- That the task was left incomplete
