Responsibilities of Production

Manager
Dr. Mridula Sahay
Production Functions
Objectives of Production Management
• To produce the goods as per the quality demanded by the
customers in most economic manner.
• To sustain as well as to increase the level of customer satisfaction.
• To make improvement in existing goods and services by regular
innovations.
• To maintain inventory at such levels that there may not be the
blockage of working capital due to excessive stock and the
production may not hamper due to unavailability of stock.
• To ensure uninterrupted supply of goods and services in right
quantity at right time and at right place.
• To produce the goods as per market demand.
• To keep proper maintenance of plant and machinery.
Objectives of Production/Operations
Management:
• Maximum customer satisfaction through quality, reliability, cost and
delivery time.
• Minimum scrap/rework resulting in better product quality.
• Minimum possible inventory levels (i.e. optimum inventory levels).
• Maximum utilization of all kinds of resources needed.
• Minimum cash outflow.
• Maximum employee satisfaction.
• Maximum possible production (i.e., outputs).
• Higher operating efficiency.
• Minimum production cycle time.
• Maximum possible profit or return on investment.
• Concern for protection of environment.
• Maximum possible productivity.
Responsibilities of Production Manager

• Production managers are responsible for the

technical management, supervision and
control of industrial production processes.
• Production managers ensure that
manufacturing processes run reliably and
efficiently.
Major responsibilities of a production
manager
• Production planning
• Production control
• Quality control
• Method analysis
• Inventory control
• Plant layout
• Work measurement and
• Other functions
Production planning

• is the first function performed by the

production manager.
• is concerned with thinking in advance
– what is to be produced,
– how it is to be produced and
– by what time should it be produced.
• It is concerned with deciding about the
production targets to be achieved by keeping
in view the sales forecasts.
Production control
• Production planning cannot be properly
achieved without an effective system of
production control. It is in fact concerned with
successful implementation of production
planning. It aims at completing production
well in time and also with lesser costs. A
proper system of production control ensures
continuous production, lesser work-in-
progress and minimization of wastages.
Quality control
The production manager is also concerned
with maintaining required quality of the
product. Quality control is concerned with
controlling the negative variables which affect
the ultimate quality of a product. It is
concerned with use of all the ways and means
where by quality standards could be
maintained.
Method analysis
• There are many alternative methods for
manufacturing a product. Some methods are
more economical than others. The production
manager should study all the methods in detail
by analyzing them in detail and select the best
alternative out of them. The process of selecting
the best alternative is known as methods of
analysis.
• Methods of analysis are considerably helpful in
minimizing the cost of production and improving
productivity of the concern.
Inventory control
The next important function to be carried by a
production manager is to exercise proper
control over the inventory. He should
determine economic order size, maximum,
minimum, average and danger levels of
materials so that problems of overstocking
and under stocking do not arise. This also
helps in minimizing wastages of materials.
Plant layout
Plant layout is primarily concerned with the
internal set up of an enterprise in a proper
manner. It is related to orderly and proper
arrangement and use of available resources
viz., men, money, machines, materials and
methods of production inside the factory. In
other words it is concerned with maximum
and effective utilisation of available resources
at minimum operating costs.
Work measurement

Work measurement methods are concerned

with measuring the level of performance of
work by a worker. Time and motion studies
techniques can be used for work
measurement. If a worker works below the
level fixed by work-measurement techniques,
his performance must be improved through
positive or negative incentives.
Other functions
Apart from the above-mentioned functions,
the production Department also carries
certain other functions viz., cost control,
standardization and storage, price analysis and
provision of wage incentives to workers etc.
Responsibilities of the job include
• planning and organizing production schedules
• assessing project and resource requirements
• estimating, negotiating and agreeing budgets and timescales with clients and
managers
• ensuring that health and safety regulations are met
• determining quality control standards
• overseeing production processes
• re-negotiating timescales or schedules as necessary
• selecting, ordering and purchasing materials
• organizing the repair and routine maintenance of production equipment
• liaising with buyers and marketing and sales staff
• supervising the work of junior staff
• organizing relevant training sessions
• In larger companies, there may be close links between production
management and general or strategic management and marketing or finance
roles.
Key skills for production managers

• confidence
• technical skills
• project management skills
• organization and efficiency
• leadership and interpersonal skills
• problem solving skills
• IT and numerical skills
• communication skills
• Team working skills.
• Managers must also be able to handle responsibility
and the pressure of meeting deadlines.
