Classroom Climate

My main goals I have been working towards since the start of my education journey are
fostering effective relationships and building effective classroom management. When I think
about classroom climate, I think about both of these goals.
During my PS3 experience, I worked towards building effective classroom management
techniques. I kept a weekly reflection on what was effective and what was not. I used call and
responses with my class as attention getters, learnt how to discipline, and acted on my
expectations.
I also was very effective in my building of relationships in my practicum. One way I was
able to enrich my classroom climate in my homeroom class was by bringing in a class pet in the
form of a plant. The students had the opportunity to name it and we drew names weekly for
students to water it. The students even began to create miniature bow ties for it to wear which we
changed weekly. This was such a fun way to connect with the class at the beginning of my time
with them and throughout my practicum.
Another way I built a great classroom climate in a few classes was by being an active
participant. This was applied in drama, PE and wellness periods. I took the time to be engaged
and a participant in drama games, PE activities and even play on the playground with my
students during wellness.
I think it is so important to have not only individual relationships with a class as the
teacher but also to establish a role in the classroom climate in multiple ways such as as an
authority, a person of trust and a person to be able to seek fun experiences with.
