Nurse Conflicts

Discussion 1

I was a trainee nurse in one of the big hospitals in the country; we were expected to work
alternative shifts, and there was a set timetable. I encountered a conflict with one of the old
nurses who was too selfish and always chose to work when she felt convenient. The nurse did
not care about the set timetable and did not care about consulting while changing shifts. I
suffered a lot when she was supposed to replace me as she came late and did not show any sign
of remorsefulness. I felt demeaned, and most of the time, I would work two or three hours extra.
I chose the Avoiding strategy in dealing with the issue as I felt no need to engage in a verbal or
physical altercation. Avoiding involves showing little regard for an issue to maintain a good
relationship with others(Eilerman,2016). The avoiding strategy is used by people who are either
new to the workplace or are fearful of their colleagues.

Reflecting on the strategy, I used to solve the conflict, it was based on the fear of the old
colleague. I would have done differently and avoided the problems I experienced in the
workplace. I compromised my well-being in the organization, which made me achieve less in the
workplace. Working so many hours to accommodate other people was a big compromise to my
rights. Since the colleague was aggressive and rude, the best strategy would be the competing
mode. The competing mode makes one appear more assertive and defensive. In this case, it
would serve me as what I was undergoing at the workplace was bullying.

Discussion 3.2

A powerful person I admire is Oprah Winfrey, a famous media personality. The thing I admire
most about Oprah is her association with other people. Oprah is an easy-going person who
interacts with the best in the world without showing pride or despising others. The ability to
motivate others in media is another attractive attribute that makes Oprah admirable. Oprah has
invested in top talents for more than 25 years, and she has motivated others to be like her.

A powerful nurse I have met was so interested in assisting others. The nurse builds a powerful
image by being ready for consultations every time. The nurse was patient with learners and ready
to listen to their challenges every time they consulted. Being ready to assist others to be like you
is a special attribute that should be celebrated in the nursing career.

A nurse working in wrinkled scrubs, with hair pulled backed haphazardly into a ponytail and
making fewer eye contacts, creates a bad image of the nursing career. A nurse who does not care
about her image does not value the reputation of their job. A nurse portraying such an image
either has low self-esteem or confidence, which is likely to affect her ability to deliver.
Confidence in a nurse makes the person trustable even by the patients(Porter et al.,2013). The
nurse does not portray a powerful image and cannot positively mentor others in the workplace. A
powerless public image means the inability to give the best in the workplace.
