Statement of Purpose

The relevance of computers cannot be overemphasized in this Information Technology age. This
electronic device has been used in every field of work in the 21 st century, more so the oil and gas
industry. It has delivered the industry’s most advanced solution for seismic exploration, reservoir
characterization and reservoir performance. So, my goal is to make significant contributions in
the oil and gas sector by building next-generation services through high-quality design and
implementation. To achieve this goal and gain professional training, I am applying for the
Petroleum Technology Development Fund scholarship to the Master’s program in computer
science at Newcastle University, United Kingdom.  
In the pursuit of my career, I have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science at Bingham
University Karu. During this time, I enrolled and excelled in several courses, including Object
Oriented Programming, Data Structures & Algorithms, Software Design Methodology, Artificial
Intelligence and Net-Centric Computing. Furthermore, I have developed significant expertise in
software design and implementation. This was evident in my Undergraduate research work,
where I designed and implemented a web based online store. It was developed with Python’s
web development framework “Django” and MySQL database.
In addition to my undergraduate training, I have significant leadership and instructional
experience which I acquired during my service as the Vice-President of the National Association
of Computer Science Student (NACOSS) Bingham chapter for a one-year period. During this
time, I took pleasure in organizing workshops, teaching, and mentoring other students during
their course-based projects.  This experience has given me the opportunity to collaborate on
projects with expatriates and department lecturers.
Furthermore, to achieve my goal, I am aware of the need to be trained in a scholarly setting that
fosters practical and active-based learning. From my personal research, I have discovered that
not only did Newcastle University has the best facilities & labs, it has also created a multicultural
and regional educational hub by admitting students and hiring world-class academicians from
different parts of the globe, this in turn has created a unique environment that fosters active
learning.  
In conclusion, with rapid digitalization, computer science will transform the oil and gas industry
for the increase benefit of Nigeria through effective implementation of software models that will
simulate the entire spectrum from black oil and compositional to thermal recovery of heavy oil
resources. It will therefore, be a great opportunity for my application to be considered as I aim to
contribute in this regard.
