PERSONAL STATEMENT

I am called Wakaye Abba Maxwell, a Nigerian graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer
Science wishing to pursue a Master’s degree in the College of Software, at Nankai University.  It
is my utmost desire to develop an advanced knowledge in software development so that I can
make significant contributions to building the next-generation applications and services through
high-quality design, and implementation. Possessing an advanced knowledge in Software
Engineering gives me a strong conviction that it would be of great benefit to my career as well as
my community.
Computers have always fascinated me from childhood where very few privileged individuals had
access to computers and digitalization. I can recall when I got my first laptop as a gift from an
uncle, where I navigated to the control panel and configured the system with my name, and it
was a day of joy. That laptop really sparked the interest and ambition I have had in software
development. In the pursuit of my ambition, I have earned a Second-Class Upper Bachelor’s
Degree in Computer Science from Bingham University Karu. Nasarawa, Nigeria.
During my undergraduate years, I enrolled and excelled in several courses, including Object
Oriented Programming, Data Structures & Algorithms, Software Design Methodology,
Information Security and Net-Centric Computing. Furthermore, I have developed significant
expertise in software design and implementation. This was evident in my Undergraduate
research work, where I designed and implemented a web based online store. It was developed
with Python’s web development framework “Django” and MySQL database.
In addition to my undergraduate training, I have gained significant leadership and instructional
experience which I acquired when I served as the Vice-President of the National Association of
Computer Science Students (NACOSS) of Bingham University chapter for one-year. During this
time, I actively organized workshops, teaching, and mentoring for other students during their
course-based projects.  This experience has given me the opportunity to collaborate on projects
with expatriates and department lecturers. With this experience and knowledge, I will be glad to
have any opportunity to teach and work with undergraduate students in the College of Software
during the period of my graduate program at Nankai University.
Moreover, I am aware of the need to be trained in a scholarly setting that fosters practical and
active-based learning. From my personal research, I have discovered that not only did Nankai
University has the best facilities & labs, it has also created a multicultural and regional
educational hub by admitting students and hiring world-class academicians from different parts
of the globe, this in turn has created a unique environment that fosters active learning. I look
forward to learning from the diverse array of students and other world class professors within
and outside the College.
In conclusion, it will be a great opportunity for me to be nurtured in such a reputable research
environment at the College of Software at Nankai University, as this will enable me to contribute
significantly towards developing the next generation of applications and services. Hence, I look
forward to the consideration of my application.
