STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Name: Maanasa Tiruveedhula

Intended Major: Computer Science

Degree Sought: MSc.

After reviewing my interests and learning, I have decided to undertake Master’s Program in
Computer Science which helps me to achieve my ambitions and goals. I have completed my
under-graduation course in Computer Science from a reputed deemed university, KL
University in India. My areas of interest include Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks
and Software Engineering. My academic exposure during under-graduation prompted to
choose the Master’s Program which helps me to achieve ultimate goals in attaining a job.

Learning about computers is always very curious because it is very useful in day to day life
and became indispensable nowadays. Real world problems can be solved with the computer
applications. As a kid, I played a lot of computer games. Later, I found that games are
developed through programs. Making software with different programming languages is very
exciting which consists of many different methods for coding. The interest in mathematics
and my liking for computers prompted me to choose Computer Science as my major in
under-graduation. I found the programming subjects to be more interesting due to the faculty
who taught us in a profound way.

Being an engineering student, I understood practical work is more important than just
theoretical learning as engineering methods involve extensive experimentation. I worked on
academic projects such as Cruise Management System using Object Oriented Programming,
Tourism Management System in Web Designing using HTML. These projects made me
understand how to work as a team effectively and also helped me in experimenting my ideas
towards the objectives of the projects. I developed thinking in different points of view and
implementing them in various methods.

In the summer term of my second year, I underwent internship program at a software

company where I took part in developing a website for an Online grocery store. I was one of
the team members and we worked effectively by discussing the ideas and implemented them.
This project helped me in learning HTML, CSS, Database, working of the websites and
different types of websites in the real world that helps people in performing their tasks with
ease.
Software Engineering course in my curriculum created enthusiasm to understand the different
processes involved in developing a project. And due to the penchant in this area, I became
part of Software Engineering research group and I have done my major project in this
domain. My major project was Implementation of Risk Assessment model using Qualitative

Approach under the mentorship of Dr. B. Chaitanya Krishna. In this project, we used the
qualitative approach which gathers user’s feedback on the application and predicts the risk by
utilizing probability of threat. Through the project, we generated a user-friendly model where
users witnesses questions spread across four domains which obtain the performance of
application from the user perspective. Finally, the risk is assessed as a combination of the
resource value and probability of threat being realized.

Also, in my third year, I had Artificial Intelligence course which I found very curious when
my faculty explained about the association of cognitive functions of humans mimicked by the
machines by explaining with some of the real-time examples such as Virtual reality, Image
processing and Game theory. I understood that Prolog is one of the languages associated with
Artificial Intelligence and we were taught programs in the language. I am interested to know
that AI helps disabled people for tackling obstacles in their day to day life. While
programming, I found it more interesting in solving the logical problems with a new language
and I decided to take up my further studies in this course.

I was an active member in cultural and technical events, coordinated the events and also
presented a paper on Human Based Cyber Security. I also attended a workshop on Cyber
Security at National Institute of Technology, Warangal.

I feel that graduate study at Western University will be the most logical extension of my
academic pursuits. A university with 135 years of establishment, extremely distinguished
faculty, good academic activity and research facilities are the factors that motivated me to
choose this program at your university. Moreover, the motto of the university which is ‘Truth
and Usefulness’ is very interesting as every knowledge has to be guided by this principle. I
shall be grateful to the Admission Committee if I am given the opportunity to pursue the
graduate program at your university. The opportunity of being associated with your esteemed
institution would be an additional motivation in achieving my ambitions and goals.
