Statement of Purpose

My conventional day involves delivering projects, skimming through e-news articles and video
streaming totaling to around two gigabytes of data consumption. I was always curious as to how many
petabytes of data are being exchanged in a single day. Eventually, I became cognizant about the fact
that, in the haystack of big data, viable insights are the best way to find the needle as it not only meets
needs but has the power to create new requirements and total environments of its own. I realized that
the domain of Computer Sciences is very dynamic and challenging. I, Reetish Chand, software
engineer from India, would like to pursue Master’s in Computer Science at your prestigious institution
as it fills me with extraordinary enthusiasm, and I imagine what an incredible benefit it would be.

During my undergraduate studies, I realized that computer science isn’t just all about
programming languages like java but is an essential science that is used to solve problems in a variety
of business, scientific and social contexts. Hence, I quickly on boarded myself on diversified
technologies around databases, web technologies, artificial intelligence & data mining concepts. I was
intrigued to implement these skills in my projects which gave an adequate proficiency and hence got
familiar with diverse notions and various challenges in these respective technologies. To refine my
professional prowess in the pragmatic world, I interned and later worked as a Software Engineer at
mroads LLC, IT firm in Hyderabad, India. In this highly competitive startup culture, I have had many
opportunities to explore around miscellaneous technologies including databases and web architectures.
Under the guidance of my supervisors, I have learnt to write optimal code that is scalable, secured &
reliable, thus transforming myself from a novice to a seasoned programmer who can solve real time
problems using technology. In all the development cycles, I observed that data in-and-out and realized
that all the applications are becoming increasingly data-centric. During the course of my education and
internship projects, I have been enthralled by the question of how data sciences are helping enterprises
and communities do wonders. Targeting the data science specialization available within the Computer
Science curriculum, offered at your treasured university I look forward to expanding my mental
horizon.

At this stage of my life, I am clear about my passion and the efforts required to fulfill my
dreams. The distinguished reason I am applying to your esteemed university is to obtain skills required
to gain expertise in domain of data sciences. The practical alignment of your rich and in-depth
coursework, notable alumni and state of the art facilities on the campus have influenced me to pursue
my masters at this university which will permit me to not only acquire an evident ken of the subject,
but also the expertise to execute it. The faculty members of the university are creative thinkers and are
committed to prepare the next generation of active minds. With international community all working
together to find solutions to diverse real-world problems, I see myself to be in a dynamic research team
and progress my learning curve with the acquaintance of eminent professors namely Tina Eliassi-Rad.
I am sure that my interaction with the professors and peers at your university will bestow me an
ambience conducive for my progression from an undergraduate to a graduate at your deemed
university.
 I am gregarious, and I communicate eloquently which helped me be a vital part of my
university’s culture as I assume a positive requisite to make academic progress is to blend in with the
non-academic events. Not only did I participate in coding challenges but also organized a few. Nearly
200 students graced city-wide technical fairs like IBM - hackathon & “Tech n Tenebrous”, both led by
me, aimed to foster innovation among the participants. This was a great experience for me to create
variety of problem statements and articulate these scenarios & help participants extract the best out of
them. Northeastern University is often cited as one of the most innovative universities in the country
who has a laser focus on its student’s success. As “Innovation” is baked into my academic culture, I
am confident that pursuing masters at Northeastern University will help me in establishing myself to
be creative, out of the box thinker in design thinking and execution.

With this background information of mine, I present my case for seeking an admission in your
prestigious university. The faculty, student lifestyle, and the research resources of your reputed
university are beyond excellence and it would be a dream come true to become part of your institution.
I always wanted to study in the United States given its warm acceptance of various ethnicities and
stature as the global leader in innovation. I would perform to the best of my abilities and hope to
acquire skills that will help me realize my dreams. Finally, I take this opportunity to thank you for
allowing me to express myself.
