What is racial discrimination?


Any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on color, race, ancestry, national or ethnic origin is
considered racial discrimination. Any person or institution who has knowledge, that is a victim of any situation which
might be considered administrative offense, must report it to the authorities

Types of race discrimination

Direct discrimination

Direct race discrimination is when someone is put at a disadvantage and treated less favourably

Example: Ade is black. They have a job interview but do not get the job. The person who gets the job is less qualified
than Ade, but is white – the employer said they would fit in better with the other white employees. This is likely to be
direct race discrimination.

Indirect discrimination

Indirect race discrimination is when a working practice, policy or rule applies to everyone but puts one person or group
at a disadvantage because of their race.

Example: An employer says they need all employees to work some Saturdays, because they're changing the opening days and times for
dealing with customer enquiries. This affects everyone who works for the organisation.
One employee is Jewish and observes the Sabbath, so they cannot work on a Saturday. They are put at a disadvantage because of their
ethnic group. If the employer cannot legally justify the change and the need for all employees to work on Saturdays, this could be indirect
discrimination.

Harassment

Racial harassment is when someone experiences bullying or unwanted behaviour related to race. The most common
form of racial harassment at work is racist language.

Example 2

Danny overhears a group of colleagues using racialised opinions and racist terms towards Turkish people. Danny is
intimidated and offended by this.

Danny is not Turkish and the language was not directed towards them. But they could still make a complaint of
harassment related to race because they feel it's created an offensive environment for them at work.

Victimisation

Victimisation is when someone is treated differently or less favourably as a result of being involved in some way with a
discrimination complaint. The law also protects someone from victimisation when someone else thinks they're involved
with a complaint.
Example

Jordan raised a grievance against their employer because of ongoing racist comments and behaviour towards them that
managers have ignored. Jordan's colleague Charlie made a statement to support Jordan's complaint after witnessing
some of the incidents.

Charlie gets some aggressive emails from a manager about the witness statement. And both Jordan and Charlie are not
invited to some important meetings. It's likely they are both being victimised.

Who here remembers this case of George Floyd in the USA?

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, an African American man, was killed while being arrested by the police. A bystander
video recording of the incident showed that a white police officer pinned Floyd to the ground while he was handcuffed.
The police officer’s knee pressed into the back of Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, even after Floyd lost
consciousness. On the video, Floyd was heard saying, "Please, I can't breathe. My stomach hurts. My neck hurts.
Everything hurts. … (I need) water or something. Please. Please. I can't breathe, officer. … I cannot breathe. I cannot
breathe.

Many see Floyd’s death as an example of systemic racism, referring to the way race disadvantages people of color in the
criminal justice system. Black and Latinx men are disproportionately represented in all levels of the criminal justice
system, from arrest to sentencing to death row. Moreover, research shows that African American people are 2.5 times
more likely to be killed by police than white people.

Slide 6 In Conclusion : In conclusion, Racism hurts peoples feelings and starts fights. Skin is just a color and doesn't
define the way that someone is or will grow up to be. All reasons people use to say that people should be racist have
counter arguments that should make it obvious that the person making the excuse is just racist and has to give you a
made up reason to why they are racist.
