Table. Crystallohydrates of alkali halide salts. As it is seen from Fig. 3 and the Table, sodium in the
KBr salt can be rather clearly revealed at a concentration
Halogen F Cl Br J ~9⋅102 mass% by the IR spectra of KBr pellets ~0.1 cm
thick, the latter being prepared by grinding the salt in a
Metal humid atmosphere. This was promoted by the
Cs crystallohydrate NaBr⋅2H2O formation, its water giving
K KF.2H2O two splitted absorption bands of valence and deforma-
tion vibrations ν2 and ν3 at 1630 and 3400 cm1. Sulfate-
Li LiCl.2H2O ions in the IR spectra of the salt are observed by the ab-
Na NaBr.2H 2O NaI.2H2O sorption bands of ν3(F2) and ν4 (F2) and at the presence of
(NaI.5H2O) complexes M2+ SO42, when the local symmetry of SO42
ions is lowered from Td to C2ν, which leads to a splitting
of ν3(F2) and ν4 (F2) vibrations into three components and
to the appearance of ν1(A1) vibration in the IR spectrum.
Clear manifestation of the resolved structure of the ab-
sorption bands of sulfates depends on a quantitative ratio
5 between SO42 and M2+ ions in KBr crystals (Figs 1, 2)
and allows to interpret their availability. The coefficient
of proportionality between SO42 ion concentration in
the KBr salt and absorption coefficient of SO42 ions at
the frequency of deformation vibrations at 615 cm-1 for a
number of salts turned out to be 0.005 mol.%⋅cm (Fig. 4).
This enables to evaluate concentration of SO42 ions the
4 most harmful impurity in the KBr salt. The minimal con-
centration of SO42 ions determined by this method de-
pends on the error of readings of the IR spectrophoto-
meter transmission level and maximum possible pellet
thickness. In this case, for the pellet thickness 0.25 cm it
