Spleen Deficiency with Dampness is a pattern of disharmony in Chinese Medicine.

Chinese Medicine views the human body as a complex system that tends toward
harmony. A pattern of disharmony is a disorder that prevents that harmony from
occurring.
Patterns give rise to symptoms that may at first glance seem unrelated from a Western
standpoint but that actually make a lot of sense when one understands Chinese
Medicine theory. For instance here Spleen Deficiency with Dampness gives rise to such
diverse symptoms as edema (https: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center
/symptoms-list /edema), general sensation of heaviness (https: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-
education-center/symptoms-list /general_sensation_of_heaviness), diarrhea
(https: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/symptoms-list /diarrhea) and urinary
difficulty (https: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/symptoms-
list /urinary_difficulty) (as well as fourteen others).
Patterns aren't exactly the Chinese Medicine equivalent to Western diseases, they're
rather the underlying causes behind diseases or health conditions. Here Spleen
Deficiency with Dampness is thought to sometimes induce conditions such as vaginal
itching (http: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/diseases/vaginal-itching),
hepatitis (https: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/diseases/hepatitis) or cystitis
(https: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/diseases/cystitis) (as well as
seventeen others).

Diagnosing Spleen Deficiency with Dampness

Diagnosing a pattern in Chinese Medicine is no easy feat and should be left to professional
practitioners. In particular one has to know how to differentiate between different types of
pulses and tongue coatings, shapes and colors as well as learn to read from a long list of
seemingly unrelated symptoms.

Dampness (http: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/diagnosing-diseases
/dampness) is the most common reason for vaginal and vulvar itching. Dampness can
find its origins Externally (http: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/diagnosing-
diseases/exterior) or Internally (http: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center
/diagnosing-diseases/interior), the latter being the case for this pattern. What causes
the Dampness here is Spleen Qi Deficiency (http: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-
center/patterns/spleen-qi-deficiency). The Spleen (http: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-
education-center/basic-concepts/spleen) is responsible for transforming and

concepts/body-fluids). An impaired Spleen function can therefore lead to an

accumulation of Dampness in the Lower Burner (http: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-

(http: //www.meandqi.com/tcm-education-center/basic-concepts/uterus) and causes
