Placed in a village called Macondo, Cien Años de Soledad is a novel by García Márquez worldwide

known and considered one of the principal pieces of literature of Latin America. Belonging to the
genre of fantastic realism, is the story of the Buendía family, that starts a new life in Macondo after
Mr and Mrs Buendía are forced to leave the place where they lived in by the appearance of a man-
murdered-by-Aureliano-Buendía`s ghost. That way, Aureliano and his wife, Úrsula, with a group of
people from the same village, start a journey searching for an ideal place in which they can build a
new life with the broken pieces of the previous one.

This long-but-pleasant novel introduces a bunch of characters, with a surprisingly good developed
psycology, that represent some strong aspects of the personality such as the strict and tenacious
Amaranta, who is able to burn her own hand to castigate herself because she is the only one who
knows that her italian lover, who was before married with her sister, commited suicide because of
her negative to get married with him. Likewise, Úrsula performs the perfect image of a martyr wife,
Aureliano represents the recklessness of a capricious spirit, Melquíades the mysterious of the
knowledge that is still to discover, and go on.

Not only because of the characters this book is so rich, but also because it talks about a lot of
different topics like the family, the capitalism and its consequences, the lonelyness, and all braided
with the main aspect of this story that is the time seen as a circular motion, just like Nietszche
coined in the 19th century recovering this concept from the stoicism.

So if you like having a relaxed and lovely time reading a beautiful book at the same time that you
get pulled into a good bunch of reflexions without noticing it or if you just love knowing about
other people's lifes, although you don't know them or even if they don't exist, you must give this
novel a try. It's the typical book that you get asked to read when you are studying but, trust me, it
worth it.
