Destroy Discontentment (IS REAL)

Affluenza - Extreme materialism and consumerism associated with the pursuit of


wealth and success and
resulting in a life of chronic dissatisfaction, debt, overwork, stress
and impaired relationships

The older we get the harder it is to fill our hearts with wonder

Is there something missing in your life? Is there a need that cannot be filled?
Will this be your pursuit? Where do you find your fulfillment?

Ecclesiastes 1: 2, 14 (KING SOLOMON)


“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”

14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are
meaningless,
a chasing after the wind."

1 Timothy 6: 6-10
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the
world,
and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be
content with that.
9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish
and harmful desires that
plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all
kinds of evil. Some people,
eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many
griefs.

If we cannot find contentment in our Lord, it will bring problems into our lives

Philippians 4: 10-13
11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content
whatever the circumstances.
12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have
learned the secret of being
content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in
plenty or in want.
13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Destroy Discontent - BOOM

1. Be aware (LEARN IT)


* Discontentment already happened from the beggining - Adam and Eve
* Problema ay kung ano ang bawal yun ang gusto (focus natin in life)
* Oldest lie - you are not enough (BUT IN GOD, WE ARE MORE THAN ENOUGH)
* Contentment is not automatic = WE NEED TO LEARN IT
* Danger = contentment is based on the standards of this world
* Danger = comparison

2. Overhaul your perspective (Understant God's Sovereignty)


* Paul wrote this when in prison
* our contentment is affected by our circumstance/situation (it should not be
based on our circumstance)
* 2 corinthians 11: 23-28
23 Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to talk like this.) I
am more. I have worked much
harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been
exposed to death again and
again. 24 Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25
Three times I was beaten with
rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a
night and a day in the open
sea, 26 I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers,
in danger from bandits,
in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city,
in danger in the country,
in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. 27 I have labored and
toiled and have often gone
without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without
food; I have been cold and naked.
28 Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all
the churches.

3 Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings, because we know that
suffering produces
perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope
does not put us to shame,
because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy
Spirit, who has been given to us.

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love
him, who[i] have been
called according to his purpose.

3. Overcome Through Christ [FIX YOUR EYES ON GOD]


* John 16:33 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have
peace. In this world you will
have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

* Philippians 3:8 = 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of


the surpassing worth of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I
consider them garbage, that I
may gain Christ

* We should know the secret of contentment = should not be based on our


circumstances and material things
our contentment should be based and anchored on our faith in God [FIX YOUR
EYES ON GOD]
* Is Jesus enough?
* The happiness that I seek, I can only find in Him. When I am content in
Him, I am complete in Him.
* Jesus + what?
* "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him" - John
Piper

4. Make it Holy (DONT BE COMPLACENT)


* Holy Discontent
* I CAN DO ALL THINGS!
* Acts 20: 24 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim
is to finish the race and
complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the
good news of God’s grace.
* Danger of false contentment = Complacency in Temporal Joy or OUR OWN
SALVATION IS ENOUGH
* Our hearts chase what we consider our treasure
* If we understand that God is the answer, we should not be contended that
other people especially our
love ones remain in the dark
* 1 Timothy 2 = 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all
people to be saved
and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Matthew 6: 19-21
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin
destroy, and where thieves break
in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and
vermin do not destroy, and
where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your
heart will be also.

1. What are my discontentment right now and what is driving it?


2. What circumstances do I need to reframe and be grateful for?
3. Are you fully content on Jesus or do you have a Jesus + ________ in your life?
4. What will you do this week to destroy discontent and pursue a “holy discontent”?
