Colleges are looking for a well-rounded student everything else that goes on your application.
It will show the
body, not necessarily a well-rounded student.
They look for those students who have found what
they love to do and have stuck with it, demon-
strating determination, commitment and passion.
Be Productive
Being productive does not just mean keeping
busy. It means doing things that are worthwhile.
Sometimes, doing nothing but exploring allows a
student to discover things about themselves or
about their interests that are valuable. When
students are too busy they can miss out on the bal-
ance that makes them the unique individuals that
colleges are looking for. Whatever you do during
your day, it should provide you with rewards of
not just getting into college, but the sustainable
type of life that you can carry with you throughout
life’s journey.
Be Relaxed- Calm down!
You might notice that when you are anxious
you cannot think as well. This is often biologically
based. Anxiety slows down the blood to the brain,
almost freezing it and not allowing it to think. You
focus on fight or flight instead of the ability to
think clearly and logically. Therefore, find some
techniques that help you relax. For some it might
be taking a warm bath or listening to music. For
others, it might mean reading a non-school related
book or dancing. Whatever it might be, stay calm
and it will pay off in spades!
Read
You may have heard this already, but I bet
you can’t fully understand the consequences of
reading. I am here to tell you that it is a wonder
drug. Better than memorizing vocabulary lists, it
will increase your understanding of vocabulary,
increase your knowledge base and help you with
not only getting into college, but also throughout
your life. This is reason enough to get started now
if you haven’t already been reading regularly. And,
by the way, read about anything that interests you
in any format, be it in a book or online. The more
you read those things that interest you, the more
you’ll want to read and the more interesting you
will be for others and for colleges too. It’s a virtu-
ous circle that you should welcome.
Join Clubs
Don’t just join to be a member. Join clubs and
get involved with activities that support your
interests, no matter what they might be. Be a
doer! Better yet, be a leader! Colleges quickly
sniff out those students who are just involved in
an activity or club for the sole purpose of listing it
on an application. These interests will tie in with

genuineness of your interests and activities.
Meet People
Start to look for those individuals who work in areas that
interest you. Ask them if you can set up a brief informational
interview with them and bring with you lots of questions so you
can learn about their occupation or interest. This will help you
decide if this is an area that you might want to pursue. If you’re
lucky enough perhaps they’ll invite you to shadow them for a day!
Know What Colleges Want to Know
Lastly, when preparing for your search for U.S. colleges, think
about two main questions that you will need to be equipped
to answer.
How will you use the resources that the college has to offer
students?
How will you contribute significantly to the college?
If you start thinking about these questions early in your high
school years, you will know to select courses and activities that
support what your answers will be. Too often students don’t
think about this until they are completing their college applica-
tions, by which time it is often too late.

Come into the college search process having done your prepa-
ration throughout your high school years and you will do well.
