01. A C 8 x 11.5 is connected to a gusset plate with 22-mm diameter bolts as shown. The steel grade is A572
Grade 50. If the member is subjected to dead load and live load only, what should be the live load and
dead load capacities of the member if the live load to dead load ratio is 3? Assume that U = 0.85. Use
ASD.
02. A WT 6 x 17.5 of A992 steel is welded to a gusset plate as shown. Determine whether the section is
adequate to support the following service loads using ASD:
D = 334 kN
L = 400 kN
W = 311 kN
03. Use ASD to design a back to back AISC designated double angle of equal legs for the central bottom chord
member DF of the truss shown below. The loads acting on the truss are the design panel loads. All
connections are with longitudinal welds. Use A36 steel and an estimated shear lag factor U = 0.85.
04. For the truss shown below, design member HI using W shape of A992 steel. The loads acting on the truss
are the design panel loads. Assume that each flange will be connected to a 20-mm thick gusset plate
with two lines of three-20-mm diameter bolts as shown in the detail. For this connection, assume that
U = 0.85. The size of the member should be controlled so you must limit your selections from W8, W10,
and W12 sections.
