Interpreting Assignment (5th meeting)

Based on the Youtube Video entitle President Obama Meets with the President of Indonesia:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a33S1-z7iW8, the interpreters using Consecutive
Interpreting. In this type, the interpreter has to listen first, then convey what the speaker
(President Obama and Joko Widodo) interpreted (source language) to the target language. The
interpreter probably took note of important things that will be conveyed to the audience.

Translation techniques used: (English to Indonesian)

1. Linguistic compression
Linguistic compression is a linguistic synthesis technique elements into TL text (Target
language). This technique is often used for spontaneous spoken translation and subtitling.
literally this translation technique is used to transfer the expression word by word but the
structure follows the rules in the target language.

 President Obama (SL): Well, it is a pleasure to meet President Widodo. I want to

congratulate him on an inspiring election. And as many of you know, I have a very
close association with Indonesia, having spent a good deal of my childhood there.
TL: Selamat siang semua, dan terima kasih. Senang sekali bisa bertemu dengan
presiden jokowi. Sebagaimana anda ketahui saya menghabiskan masa kecil saya
di Indonesia.

 President Obama (SL): I think that in watching President Widodo's election, it is

once again an affirmation of the full transition that Indonesia has made to a thriving
democracy and a model for the kind of tolerance and pluralism that we want to see all
around the world.
TL : melihat pemilu di Indonesia merupakan penegasan tentang transisi demokrasi
dan Indonesia juga merupakan contoh bagi toleransi pluralisme di dunia.

Analysis: In both sentences delivered by the interpreter, he uses more concrete, precise or
specific terms, from words that are too long into a point of view that can be understood by the
target language or in other words the actual meaning of words conveyed is shorter. This
technique is the disclosure of a sentence translation that is shorter than that delivered by the
speaker. Example in the sentence: “I think that in watching” is shortened by the interpreter to
"melihat" in Indonesian. so the actual meaning is made shorter and able to be understood by
the target language in a perspective that is easier to understand but with the same meaning that
President Obama wants to convey in English. Same as the sentence "I have a very close
association with Indonesia, having spent a good deal of my childhood there" shortened to
“Sebagaimana anda ketahui saya menghabiskan masa kecil saya di Indonesia” so the target
language can easily understand about what the speaker says.

2. Borrowing
Borrowing is a technique of taking words or expressions from source language. This
borrowing technique can be in the form of pure borrowing and naturalized borrowing (adjusted
to the phonetic system and morphology of the target language). Usually in the interpretation of
the language that is translated it has the same words and the same meaning in the two languages
that speaker want to translate.

 President Obama (SL): I know that President Widodo has a very ambitious reform
agenda, and my main message here today is that the United States wants to be a strong
partner with Indonesia in helping achieve its goals.
TL: Saya tahu bahwa Presiden Joko Widodo memiliki agenda yang berambisi tentang
pembaharuan untuk untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat indonesia dan
amerika serikat. Dan pesan utama saya hari ini adalah bahwa amerika serikat ingin
menjadi mitra di dalam proses pembaharuan ini.

Analysis: The interpreter uses the word "agenda" in the interpretation he wants to convey, and
the word is a word that comes from a foreign language (English) which has been integrated
into Indonesian as part of common words that are often used by the public and are generally
accepted. The meaning of agenda in English has the same meaning as Indonesian, which means
a scheduled of events to be attended in the context of a video.

3. Modulation
Modulation is a translation technique that changes the point views, focus, or cognitive
categories in relation to SL texts (source language), both at the lexical and structural levels.
This change is usually carried out in different cultures in the sense of one language with
another. So that the interpreter changes the meaning of the language to be translated into the
target language (TL) point of view.

 President Obama (SL): As part of our comprehensive partnership we've already worked
on a wide range of issues, economic, development security, people-to-people
exchanges, environmental cooperation and I look forward to discussing how we can
build on that momentum, perhaps even with a visit by President Widodo in
Washington next year.
TL: melalui kemitraan komprehensif kita sudah memiliki kemitraan yang luar biasa
dalam berbagai hal, ekonomi, keamanan, pembangunan, pertukaran, dan saya ingin
melanjutkan diskusi ini mungkin termasuk juga undangan bagi presiden joko widodo
untuk berkunjung ke amerika serikat tahun depan.
 President Obama (SL): So, Mr. President, I very much appreciate the opportunity to
meet with you. I hope that we can develop not only a strong personal friendship but can
continue to build the strong friendship between our two peoples.
TL: Saya senang sekali bertemu dengan bapak presiden. Dan saya mengharapkan kita
bisa memperkuat persahabatan pribadi maupun persahabatan antara kedua negara
kita. Terima kasih.

Analysis: In this case, the two sentences will be translated by looking for equivalent words or
expressions that can convey the message implied in a source text. For example the word
"Washington" which we know that it refers to the capital city of the United States of America.
However, the interpreter changes the meaning to "Amerika" so that the target language
understands the speaker's intent in that context. The second example of the sentence "the strong
friendship between our two peoples" which interpreted as friendship that can be made by more
than two people but the interpreter translates it into " maupun persahabatan antara kedua negara
kita" so that the target have better understands of what is meant by friendship is more than two
people means establishing relationships with people from two countries (Indonesia and the
United States America).

4. Literal Translation
Literal Translation: is a translation technique in which the interpreter translates the SL in
the word by word into the TL (The literal meaning/meaning or literal meaning/meaning is the
meaning of the word as it came from).

 President Obama (SL): I also want to thank Indonesia for the leadership regionally,
as well as internationally, that it has shown on a number of issues.
 TL: Saya juga ingin mengucapkan terimakasih kepada indonesia dalam hal2 yang
menyangkut masalah kawasan asia tenggara maupun internasional.
Analysis: The translation in the sentence above describes a word-for-word translation that is
too close to the source text. Overall it almost has a translation that sounds almost the same in
the target language and conveys the meaning of the original text. Almost all sentences are
delivered according to the translation in Indonesian, as translated by part in the delivery by the
interpreter.

5. Description
Description : Is a translation technique that uses the addition of explanations in the
translation. Therefore, it is not uncommon that the results of the translation of this technique
usually do not look like the results of the translation, but rather like the addition of information
from the interpreter itself so that the points that the speaker wants to convey are more specific
in discussing something.
 President Obama (SL): As a leader in ASEAN, Indonesia has been a driving force
around the work that we've done on disaster assistance, on education, on scientific and
technical exchanges, as well as issues of maritime security. And both our countries
agree that it's important for us to maintain international norms that ensure
freedom of navigation, and that all countries are treated fairly and equitably.
TL: sebagai pemimpin dalam asean, indonesia tetap memainkan peranan penting di
dalam kawasan ini, dan memimpin dalam berbagai hal termasuk keamanan maritime.
begitu “Pentingnya kebebasan delegasi, ketaatan pada norma internasional dan
penyelesaian sengketa secara damai. Hal2 yang akan kita bahas bersama nanti
dalam KTTAT dan ASEAN hari minggu ini di Myanmar”

 President Obama (SL): And finally, as one of the world's largest democracies and also
as one of the world's largest Islamic populations, Indonesia has played an extraordinary
role in promoting pluralism and respect for religious diversity. And I want to thank
Indonesia in the work that it's done to isolate extremism and to work with other
countries around counterterrorism efforts.
TL: sebagai salah satu demokrasi terbesar di dunia, Indonesia dengan penduduk islam
terbesar memberikan semangat penting dalam keamanaan global. Secara khusus saya
ingin mengucapkan terima kasih kepada indonesia karena upaya menjunjung
pluralisme dan karna contoh sebagai negara beragam, pluralisme , dan toleransi
tinggi.
Analysis: In both translations above, the interpreter adds some of information that is not
conveyed orally by the source language. The translation looks more natural when added
information that will lead to the topic that the speaker wants to convey. For example in the first
translation, SL did not directly tell about the place where the meeting took place in Myanmar,
but the interpreter added this information to clarify what the speaker (Mr. obama) wanted to
convey. In the second translation, the interpreter did the same thing by adding information
about “pluralism” which not included in Obama's speech, but to make it look more natural and
to make the meaning conveyed more easily understood by the target language, the interpreter
added a few words to complete it.

Translation techniques used: (Indonesian to English)

1. Amplification/Addition
Amplification/Addition is a translation technique in which the interpreter is paraphrasing,
losing, or adding explanation more specifically when the interpreter conveys the meaning of
SL to the TL.

 SL: Terima kasih, Pertama kali bertemu dengan presiden Obama dan kami
mengucapkan terima kasih atas kedatangan utusan khusus Secretary of State, John
Kerry dalam pelantikan saya.
TL: I would like to thank Your Excellency and this will be the first time that I meet
President Obama. I would like to also thank you for your special envoy, the Secretary
of State, John Kerry, for his visit to my inauguration ceremony.

Analysis: In that utterance, the second interpreter uses Amplification/Addition. First, the SL is
“Terima kasih”, then, the interpreter said “I would like to thank your excellency” as the TL.
Second, the SL is “kami mengucapkan terima kasih atas kedatangan”, then, the interpreter said
“I would like to also thank you for your special envoy” as the TL. This additional utterance
may be conveyed to suit a formal situation.

2. Calque
Calque is a translation technique in which the interpreter is translating a word/phrase from
SL to TL. Usually the SL has an equivalent in the target language.

 SL: Terima kasih, Pertama kali bertemu dengan presiden Obama.

TL: This will be the first time that I meet President Obama.

Analysis: In that utterance, the SL is “Pertama kali bertemu dengan presiden Obama”, then,
the TL is “This will be the first time that I meet President Obama”. actually the second
interpreter can say “This will be the first time I meet President Obama” but, here the second
interpreter uses / adds the equivalent word “that”.

3. Literal Translation
Literal Translation is a translation technique in which the interpreter translates the SL in
the word by word into the TL.

 SL: Indonesia adalah negara muslim terbesar di dunia dan sudah melaksanakan
pemilihan presiden dan dilaksanakan dengan sebuah pesta demokrasi yang sangat
bagus. Ini menunjukkan bahwa islam dan demokrasi dapat berjalan dengan baik.
TL: Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world and has just conducted its
presidential election, a cause for the democratic celebration in our country. And it
shows that Islam and democracy can go forward

Analysis: In that utterance, the second interpreter uses a kind of Literal translation technique.
We can see from the SL “Indonesia adalah negara muslim terbesar di dunia dan sudah
melaksanakan pemilihan presiden”, then the TL that conveyed by the interpreter is “Indonesia
is the largest Muslim country in the world and has just conducted its presidential election”.
This utterance shows that the interpreter actually translates word by word.
4. Borrowing
Borrowing is a translation technique in which the interpreter uses words/phases when
translate the SL to theTL. The interpreter makes a choice to use the same word in the TL as it
is found in the SL.

Based on the Youtube Video, there are some kinds of words that belong to borrowing
techniques.

 Demokrasi - Democracy
 Presiden - President
 Ekstremisme - Extremism
 Pluralisme - Pluralism
 Radikalisme – Radicalism

5. Reduction
Reduction is a translation technique in which the interpreter reduces certain elements of the
SL.

 SL: Dan juga berkaitan dengan masalah extremism dan radicalism saya kira indonesia
juga mempunyai pengalaman lebih dari 30 tahun menangani ini. Dan kita akan
teruskan nantinya akan kita tambah dengan bukan hanya pendekatan keamanan tetapi
juga pendekatan budaya dan pendekatan keagamaan untuk mengurangi dan
menghilangkan radikalisme dan ekstremisme.
TL: In regards to extremism and radicalism, we have an experience of more than 30
years. And we will continue to fight this extremism and radicalism, and not only by a
security approach but also by a cultural approach and also a religious approach.

Analysis: In that utterance, the second interpreter also uses Reduction translation technique.
The SL is ”Dan juga berkaitan dengan masalah extremism dan radicalism saya kira indonesia
juga mempunyai pengalaman lebih dari 30 tahun menangani ini”, then, the TL is “ In regards
to extremism and radicalism, we have an experience of more than 30 years” so, this technique
made the words shorter and more effective.

 SL: Kita ingin juga stabilitas keamanan di kawasan kita lebih baik dan oleh sebab itu
kerja sama antar negara akan terus kita terapkan terutama di bidang keamanan dan
perdamaian.
 TL: With regards to the stability security stability in the region, we will continue
cooperation among countries in responding to security issues in the region.

Analysis: Same as the first utterance, this second utterance also shows that the second
interpreter uses Reduction translation technique. The TL is “Kita ingin juga stabilitas keamanan
di kawasan kita lebih baik”. Then, the interpreter delivers the TL “With regards to the stability”
shorter and to the point.
