2-5.Cleaning procedure – General
A. Preparing helicopter for cleaning.
1) Cover static vents, pitot tubes, air ducts, heater ducts, etc., to prevent
entrance of cleaning solution.

2) Make sure all drain holes are open.

3) Mask as necessary.

B. Cleaning.

4) Wipe off spilled oil, grease, hydraulic fluid, etc., with a solvent.
5) Apply the cleaning solution by hand or spray. Use sponges, soft brushes, or
cloths to loosen soils.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE SPRAYS. DO NOT FLUSH LUBRICANTS FROM BEARINGS

NOTE: Work small areas to prevent the cleaning solution from drying on the surface. It is usually advanta geous to
start at the lower surfaces and work outward and upward.
6) Rinse away loosened soil and cleaner residue with a stream of water. Check
for residue by lightly wiping with a cloth. Reclean and rinse as needed to
eliminate residue.
7) Follow the cleaning with an overall rinse.

8) Dry.

2-6.Cleaning procedure - Specific areas

A. Main and tail rotor blades

9) Wipe blades with cloth wetted with Aliphatic Naptha
10) Rinse and dry.
11) Check for residue. Reclean, rinse and dry as needed.
Main and tail rotor hub assemblies.
12) Wipe parts with cloths wetted with a solvent.

CAUTION:DO NOT FLUSH LUBRICANTS FROM BEARINGS.


13) Use detergent and water to remove solid soils as necessary.

14) Rinse and dry.

15) Check for residue, reclean, rinse, and dry as needed.

C. Components under cowlings.


16) Wipe with cloths wetted with solvent as necessary to remove excessive
fluids, grease, and oil.
17) Use detergent and water as necessary.

18) Rinse and dry.

19) Check for residue, reclean, rinse, and dry as needed

D. Baggage compartment.
20) Wipe with a solvent to remove oily soils.

21) Use detergent and water to remove solids.

22) Rinse and dry.

23) Check for residue. Reclean, rinse, and dry as needed.

24) When known spills have occurred, local clean-up procedures include wiping
up spills with swabs. The affected area should be scrubbed with soap and
water and wiped dry with swabs. Use scrub water sparingly to avoid

spreading the spilled fluids or soaking through the floors.


25) Carpets soaked with spills should be removed for cleaning.

26) Dry all blankets and carpets before reinstallation.

E. Cabin.
27) Clean upholstery as recommended in the applicable helicopter manual.

28) Remove seat cushions and carpet when applicable.

29) Remove debris (salt, sand, etc.) from seats and floor by brushing or with a
vacuum cleaner.

NOTE:Pay special attention to the area around fastener heads, along bulkheads, and in corners.
30) Wash seats, floor, and adjacent areas with detergent and water. Areas
covered with permanently installed interior covering should be cleaned with
a soft brush and damp cloth. Do not wet areas that cannot be completely
dried.
31) Rinse. Check for residue, reclean, and rinse as needed.

32) Dry

33) When known spills have occurred, local clean-up procedures include wiping
up spills with swabs. The affected area should be scrubbed with soap and
water and wiped dry with swabs. Use scrub water sparingly to avoid
spreading the spilled fluids or soaking through the floors.
34) Carpets soaked with spills should be removed for cleaning.
35) Clean spills on seat tracks per step (7).

36) Dry all blankets and carpets before reinstallation.

F. Fungus treatment (when necessary).

37) Inspect for fungus in the following areas:

—In the nose.

—Under the floor.

—Behind sound deadening on the bulkheads and overhead.

—In closed compartments.

—In the tailboom.

—In the baggage compartment.

—Behind cowlings.

—In float covers.

—In the doors.

—Under and behind auxiliary tanks.

37) Clean the area to be treated with a solvent to remove oil and grease residue.

38) Remove debris, soil, and other contaminants by washing with detergent and
water (MIL-C-43616).
39) Allow to dry or wipe dry.
CAUTION: ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (99%) IS FLAMMABLE. ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (99%) SHOULD NOT BE
INGESTED AND INHALATION OF LARGE QUANTITIES OF VAPOR SHOULD BE AVOIDED. (THIS
IS RUBBING ALCOHOL AND INCIDENTAL SKIN CONTACTIS NOT A PROBLEM.)

40) Treat the fungus by wiping or spraying with isopropyl alcohol (99%).

NOTE: 99% isopropyl alcohol may soften some plastics. (70% may be used on plastics but the 99% should not be
used on polycarbonateor acrylic plastics.) Alcohols may remove lubricants and preservatives.

 Alcohols may remove lubricants and preservatives.

41) Allow to set for at least 4 hours.

42) Rewash with detergent and water.

43) Rinse, check for residue, reclean as necessary.

44) Dry.

45) Apply Corrosion Preventive Compound (CPC) and lubricants or refinish as


needed.
