READING

1. Read the following text.

Choosing to be an ethical consumer
Many of the items we use every day are produced through slave or child labour. An
estimated 27 million people around the world work in slavery conditions. Children and adults
work in unsafe situations for little pay to get us the stuff we buy, including our mobile phones,
shoes and even peel-and-eat shrimp. It’s unlikely you don’t use something daily that was
5 produced unethically somewhere else and sold in your country.
Quick to forget
You likely already knew that child and slave labour is a common problem in our global
marketplace. It’s common knowledge that some of the top brands employ these kinds of
labour practices. But when you look at a tag on a piece of clothing and see it was made in a
10 country with poor worker protections, do you put it back on the rack?
Probably not. We have a strange ability to conveniently forget when we learn that
something was made unethically, because it makes us uncomfortable and we don’t want to
think about it.
So what can we do?
15 If you know something was made unethically, don’t buy it and give yourself time to think
about it.
You can research the brands you buy from. There’s lots of information online about where
our stuff comes from, but we must make some effort to find it. If you don’t agree with how it’s
made, don’t buy it. There are many brands centred around ethical labour practices and
20 sustainability.
Unfortunately, ethically-made products are often more expensive. The perfect solution if
you’re on a tight budget is to buy second-hand. Getting what you need at charity stores and
vintage shops or online at eBay, Depop, thredUP and other second-hand sites is a great way to
avoid supporting brands that don’t care for their workers or the environment. It’s also much
25 better for the planet.
