Zero Hunger Goal No. 2

Executive Summary

This report intends to discuss the problem recognized as UN Goal No. 2, "Zero

Hunger." The report contains an in-depth discussion of this problem, including the

causes, people affected, and what can be done to move towards a process of solving this

problem. This way, a company recognized worldwide and is a reference in its products,

Nestlé, will receive 3 recommendations of projects that can be developed in the

company to add to all the projects already developed within the company. The report

contains a description of the chosen company and why it is the preferred company to

receive these recommendations. Furthermore, the report will include the budgets of

these projects, making it easier to visualize and develop them.

Zero Hunger Goal No. 2

Introduction

The fight against Hunger is a global problem related to economic issues that directly

affect the misery present in most countries' lives. Therefore, it is a globally discussed

problem. There are already several projects that highlight how important it is to carry

out joint projects involving different countries, companies, and people to gain visibility

and contain this problem. Zero Hunger is a goal that aims to combat the misery that a

part of society is facing, developing projects that will make more food available to

people who do not have access to food on a daily basis to fight Hunger. I will explain

how impactful this problem is on society and how it is a problem that needs to be

addressed worldwide. Considering the goals of Goal No. 2, we can include that many

people in poorer countries and disadvantaged areas started

to have access to food, breast milk. As human beings, we know that we need to eat

foods that provide the nutrients necessary for survival and good health. Hunger causes

disease and causes many deaths; if this initiative is not controlled and maintained, the

world could lose many people. This article will discuss more Goal No. 2, providing a

better understanding of the plan developed for a company that can perform the

suggested project to fight Hunger. The selected company will receive potential

recommendations for implementing projects that can support the achievement of Goal

No 2.

UN Goal No. 2

Goal No. 2 discusses an issue that impacts millions of people in different parts of the

world, Hunger. The situation in which an individual goes for a period without the

4

necessary foods that provide the nutrients and calories for the body and health to

function normally. According to research done by FAO, about 15 million people suffer

from not having food to eat, about 155 million children are victims of malnutrition

(Atanasovski, 2018). These data reveal tragic figures, but even in the face of them, it is

possible not only to hope but also to believe that world hunger can be controlled and

eradicated. The fight against Hunger becomes more and more possible to visualize in a

plan considering the application of measures that require collaborative work and a lot of

planning.

The fight against Hunger has been going on since the past when colonizers arrived in

new lands and applied their customs and way of life, which were very different from the

way the natives of the land used to live. The exceptionally high exploitation of the

products in these lands for export irradiated various foods, affecting food production

and generating Hunger. This scenario has been extended until today. Many countries

dedicate their products only for export, which leads to a shortage of products generated

internally in the country. The increased value of these foods makes it difficult for the

less fortunate to consume them.

This is one of the reasons that characterize the causes of Hunger in the world. Food

shortages in certain regions are the consequence of political and armed conflicts

generated by corruption and wars. The social inequality and poverty identified in many

countries lead to people not having access to food that seems commonplace to a part of

the world's population. Poorly planned economic policies and mistakenly structured

agrarian reforms generate a lack of food. The most impacting of all of this is that we are

the cause of this whole situation. Still, the fight against Hunger should be a topic for

discussion.

5
Zero Hunger Goal No. 2

Nowadays, it is clear that we know that Hunger in the world can end; even though this

fight is huge, it is a reality.

For this reason, the fight against Hunger is a relevant topic to discuss. Millions of

people enjoy the most expensive food many times a day while others have absolutely

nothing to eat. This inequality is intriguing, but it is the reality we find ourselves in all

over the world. That's why fighting for policies and projects that support the end of this

problem created a long time ago and is a daily problem for millions of people until

today is indispensable.

Company

The company that was chosen to receive the recommendations for UN Goal No 2. is

Nestle. Nestle stands out from many other companies in the food and beverage industry

as the largest food and beverage company globally, with a conscious focus on nutrition

and health. According to the Nestlé website, the company has 2000 brands that make up

different products such as milk, cereals, children's products, dairy products, water,

cookies, and much more (Nestlé). This wide variety of products and their quality has led

to its remarkable success, which is active in 186 different countries (Nestlé). Given such

success and profit generated by Nestlé and considering the current company's scenario,

implementing campaigns against Hunger worldwide is highly relevant. It assumes that

the company has different food and products for children who are most affected by

malnutrition in some world areas.

It is possible to analyze that Nestlé, being a leading food company, already has several

ongoing projects that offer support in different countries. Nestlé has developed projects

that fight against Hunger in Honduras, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, the United Kingdom, and

6
Zero Hunger Goal No. 2

the United States during the pandemic (Grabisch, 2020). These countries have been

supported by donations of food and money to needy institutions, hospitals, charities,

people, and even animals. It is well known that Nestlé is already developing several

projects to help reduce Hunger in the world. For this reason, this company was chosen

to receive recommendations that will add more and more to the projects already

developed by the company. The suggestions that will be made to Nestle have great

potential to be developed because the company already has ongoing projects that can

become even better; therefore, considering the great possibility that the company has in

the market and worldwide, it was chosen to receive the recommendations of this project.

Recommendation 1

The first recommendation is based on a project that would not have an end date; it could

be carried forward into the following years of the company's development because it is

a project that, when carried out over a long period, would bring significant impact to the

fight against Hunger. Thus, the first project would be destined for each customer's

purchase of a Nestlé product; 0.1% of the profit from the sale of this product would be

donated. With this, if the company wanted to keep all the money collected from these

donations made by the customers themselves when they buy Nestlé products, the cash

donations would be transformed into food donations at the end of each month's

continuous donation plan within the company.

Considering that the company would divulge this action plan of donations, this would

attract more customers interested in the brand and would be one of the ways to

differentiate from competing brands; when customers make a purchase choice, they will

choose to buy the Nestlé brand. Not only for the quality of the product but for knowing

7
Zero Hunger Goal No. 2

that by purchasing that product, they would be contributing to solving one of the most

relevant problems in the world, which is the fight against Hunger.

This project is possible to visualize, given the great profit that Nestlé makes every year.

The magazine Forbes evaluates the most current profit of the Nestlé company as 13

billion dollars, revealing the potential donations that can be made with each product

bought from the company (Forbes). Given this, this first recommendation would come

accompanied by marketing campaigns to generate information to Nestle's consumers

about the developed project. With this information disseminated, purchases of Nestlé

products could even increase and would bring customers a highly optimistic view of the

company.

Recommendation 2

According to research conducted by UNICEF, by the year 2020, 38.9 million children

under the age of 5 were victims of malnutrition that causes overweight; the most

affected regions were Central and Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa (Scribd). One

of the essential phases in a child's life to develop healthily and survive without having

its development affected is the first months of life. The malnutrition that affects many

children during their first months of life means that many babies do not even make it to

their first year. In addition, many children do not have access to breast milk because

their mothers do not produce enough milk during the breastfeeding process or face some

problems during this period. So, considering that Nestlé is a company with several types

of milk to complement or replace the breastfeeding process, this second

recommendation is based on that.

8
Zero Hunger Goal No. 2

With the donation of milk, supplements, and infant food to regions such as Central and

Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa that struggle with various malnutrition problems,

the development of this project would be fundamental in the fight against Hunger. With

this, Nestlé could develop the project of donations of these products. Every month, a

part of the profit collected with these products would be designated to the contribution

to these regions. Thus, with these donations, we could offer the babies the nutrients they

need to survive and grow up as healthy and normal children without going through

depressing situations in their first months of life.

Recommendation 3

The third recommendation discusses a problem that many people do not relate to world

hunger: food waste. The World Food Programme revealed that "One-third of food

produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally. This amounts to about 1.3

billion tons per year, worth approximately $1 trillion." (World Food Programme, 2020)

These figures reveal that much food is wasted, especially on food production farms in

developed countries. Due to a lack of information and technology, farmers often cannot

control their crops and thus lose a lot of food that would otherwise be produced. This

waste must be made aware of because these workers often do not have access to

information about how harmful this is to the fight against hunger in the world.

With this, recommendation number 3 is based on developing campaigns that can be

carried out on the farms within the Nestlé company to generate information for its

employees. This type of campaign can start within the Nestlé company. When the

project becomes more solid and concrete, the company can partner with other

companies from different segments to become more prominent and impact other

companies. The fight against Hunger is a process that various parties must support.

9
Zero Hunger Goal No. 2

Therefore, with the realization of this project, Nestlé could become a reference in the

world to disseminate information about food waste.

Recommendation and Implementation

The suggested recommendation that Nestlé implement is recommendation number 1.

This recommendation is highly valid to implement because it would bring a

contributing relationship with all its customers. Given the worldwide impact that Nestlé

has in the market, this project would be a way to show how the company cares and is

part of the fight against Hunger. Many customers would support and admire the

company when they know that they are fighting against a global problem when they buy

their products. The fight against Hunger can only become possible when there are many

active parties aware of this problem. This way, the customers and the company could

make sure that each day they would be working to solve this problem and making a

difference with just one purchase at the supermarket.

Conclusion

From the discussions on UN Goal No. 2, we can conclude that the fight against Hunger

is becoming an increasingly manageable and solvable problem. The solution to this

problem lies in all countries working together and in influential organizations like

Nestlé. Nestlé is a company with a worldwide influence and great potential in projects

that would help in the fight against Hunger. Therefore, the recommendations would be a

way to implement projects that would benefit the world and the company itself—

considering that Nestlé is already a great reference in projects that support the fight

against Hunger, the recommendations made possible to be carried out and developed

effectively. Furthermore, the recommendations bring a different vision of new projects

10
Zero Hunger Goal No. 2

that would positively complement the company, and its customers see it. The

development of projects that work on defects within the company, such as improving

waste on Nestlé's farms, can benefit from saving wasted products, which would

decrease expenses within the company. The recommendations were developed with

Nestle's company capacity in mind, and following the company's line of thinking, which

has as its mission statement, "Our mission of "Good Food, Good Life" is to provide

consumers with the best tasting, most nutritious choices in a wide range of food and

beverage categories and eating occasions, from morning to night." (Nestlé) With that,

consider the possibility of greater food delivery in needy regions to generate a better and

healthy life.
