COVID-19 Status Update

By: Elleason Joshua Francisco

International: There are 364,191,494 confirmed cases in the world as of January 28 where 3,321,782 are
the new ones.

National: Meanwhile, the country has a tally of 3,545,680 total cases as of January 30 where 16,953 are
the new ones. Its total active cases are 202,864 while the total deaths are 53,891 and 20 are the new
ones. However, it has 3,288,925 total recoveries where 27,638 are the new ones.

Earlier in September 2021, the daily number of reported cases in the country has been progressively
dropping except in December 2021 when a sudden dramatic surge in cases began.

Although the positivity rates are still high, the present situation is slowly getting better due to the
continuous vaccine roll-out by the government and the increasing number of fully vaccinated
individuals.

Local: In San Jose, there are 2,560 confirmed cases with 140 deaths as stated in the recent report of the
Department of Health (DOH). Hence, it has a total of 2,348 recoveries.

People whose ages are between 20-39 recorded the highest number of cases in the municipality. They
already comprise half of the total cases even if it’s just the first week of January only. Therefore, they
are now considered as the most vulnerable group followed by those in ages 40-49. It must be noted that
it was the elderly or senior citizens only who are considered as the most vulnerable group due to the
lack of stamina and proper exercise.

Despite this, 65% of its total population has already been vaccinated as of January 15, 2022, which
includes minors aged 12 years older and the fully vaccinated ones. Accordingly, the healthcare workers
who are at higher risk and exposure, have a higher recovery rate due to booster doses.

Onion Farming Status in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro

By: Florence Domingo

 From Mr. Arnold John Bumanglad of Barangay Mapaya

He is an onion farmer who used 10 cans of onion seedlings for this planting season
(November-March). He started scattering the seedlings on his one-hectare land in November 20
and planted the grown ones on December 20. He spent fifteen thousand pesos (P15,000) for this
process which included paying sixty (60) farmers. Meanwhile, he spent an estimated amount of
seventy thousand pesos (P70,000) for fertilizer, insecticide, and other chemicals needed for
farming. However, he also pays an amount of fifteen thousand pesos (P15,000) for the rent of
the land. Therefore, he spends a total amount of around one hundred thousand pesos
(P100,000) for this cropping season.

Despite this, he is still confident with the quality of his onions because it has a good type
of soil and received proper irrigation. He is expecting to harvest it either by March or April this
year. However, he is hoping that the government will prohibit the entry of imported onions in
the country or even in the province only to ensure the balance in their profit since the prices of
onions are not fixed.

Note: Due to time constraints, it is impossible to receive immediate feedback or response from the
Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) for the official status of onion farming in San Jose. Therefore, an
onion farmer was asked for the status of onion farming. Although it is not official, it is still beneficial
since he has actual experiences in such practice.
