 Identify the tone and mood of a selection or utterance.
 Pick-out clue words that convey the tone and mood of a
selection or utterance.
 Relate oneself with the characters in a selection or utterance.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT


Inferring is one thing we do when we read a story, poem or some other
types of written texts. When we read we want to know the speaker’s/writer’s
tone and mood.

Tone - is about what the writer or speaker feels about the character.
Readers can only infer the speaker’s tone based on the chosen
words used by the writer or speaker.

Examples: Unsure, sincere, entertained, depressed, sympathetic,


cheerful, angry, bitter, excited, happy, etc.

Mood – is the general feeling or atmosphere that the piece of


writing creates. This is the feeling that you get while reading a
certain piece.

Examples: Playful, loving, joyful, (positive mood)


Anxious, scary, worried, lonely (negative mood)
