FS 1 EPISODE 5

Creating an Appropriate Learning Environment

OBSERVE, ANALYZE, REFLECT

Activity 5.1:

Managing Time, Space, and Learning Resources

OBSERVE

Observe and use the observation sheet provided for you to document your
observations.

1. As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners.
Note their ages.
2. How many boys are there? How many girls?
3. Focus on their behaviour. Are they already able to manage their own
behaviour?
4. Can the learners already work independently?
5. Describe their span of attention.

Name of the School Observed: Abucay National High School

Location of the School: Abucay, Pilar, Sorsogon

As I have observed, I witnessed that there are some students who are
very cooperative in the class and there are some who do not involved
themselves in class discussion which can see their shyness in participating. In
the classroom that I have observed is composed of 35 students, 15 boys and
most of them are girls which composed of 20. Since they are old enough, some
of the students already know how to manage their own behavior by behaving well
in the class, while most of them like to wait for teacher to remind them to stop
doing things which could destruct the class.
The span of attention is very short, since they always want to catch the
attention of a teacher, or even to their classmates. Some of them can focus for
just a few minutes and after that, they usually make noise and do other matters in
their seat. As I have seen, most of the pupils pay attention to the discussion
especially those who seating in front. Though some of them are not likes the one
who seated at the back, but then they are still confident to answer the teacher
whenever he/she calls their attention.

ANALYZE

Analyze and answer these questions on observed classroom environment

practices. It is also good to ask the teacher for additional information, so you can
validate your observation. Writes your notes below; and then organize your data
in the Table that follows.

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of

teaching aids, books, students’ belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe
these areas. Will it makes difference if these areas for specific
purposes are not present?
 Yes, there are specific areas in the classroom for specific
purposes, like for example the storage of the teaching aids, this
storage is located usually on the side of the classroom where in
it is arrange properly. I think according to the arrangement also
is the proper arrangement also of the lesson period. And it could
help to the teachers or even to the student to have an easy
access of finding the needed educational materials. And another
is the books; it serves as the references of thee students and
even the teacher for their searching information. It should be
placed in the specific area inside the classroom they called it the
mini library. The students and teachers must have easy access
of the materials that can meet their needs. And yes, it will make
difference if these areas for specific purposes are not present.
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down.
 As I observed inside the classroom, I don’t even see any posted
classrooms rules and procedures.
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If Yes and
the resource teacher are available, ask him/her to describe the
process.
 No because there are no classroom rules and procedures.
4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? Prayer, attendance,
assignment of monitors, warm-up activities, etc.) How are they done?
 The teacher started the class with the prayer done by the
student; she allows student to arrange their chair and pick-up
the pieces of paper under their chairs. The teacher recalling the
previous topic by asking questions before starting the lesson.
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis for this
arrangement? Does this help in managing the class?
 Yes and the basis of the seating arrangement are from the
student’s last name. It helps in managing the class by, the
teacher will know easily if how many of his/her students are
present and absent.
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
 The teacher usually tells the student to be quite because there
are times that the other students start talking to their seatmates
especially when they feel excitement about the lesson.
7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the
teacher do? Describe the behaviour strategies used.
 The teacher used the words which is not too bad to minimize
the noise and the unnecessary behavior done by the students.
The teacher also sometimes gives time to the students until
they’ve realized and behave on their own.
8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviours? (behaviour
strategies)
 The teacher acts as a model and shows her equal treatment
among the students. He/she give their students the time to
speak and express their own opinions and ideas and being
acknowledge for that to boost their confidence.

REFLECT
Reflection as a future teacher
1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?
 As a future teacher, I need to enforce positive discipline to my
future students because, to teach them on how to make the
appropriate choices and to guide them from the right path away
from danger. It will also them boost their confidence and build
self-esteem.

ANALYZE
1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learning
behaviour?
 Through classroom organizations and routines, students can
actively participate in the classroom discussions. It will help to
achieve an organized and systematic learning process.
2. What should the teacher have in mind when she/he designs the classroom
organization and routines? What theories and principles should you have
in mind?
 Teacher should put in her mind that designing the classroom
organization and routines that would avoid some of the distractions
that keep the students from functioning effectively and would affect
the students’ behaviour and learning. Behaviourist theory should be
considered, that the teacher’s role is to establish rule and
procedures and to communicate these rules clearly to students to
implement appropriate reward and punishment for the compliance
of the rules.
3. Which behaviour strategies were effective in managing the behaviour of
the learners? In motivating the students? Why were they effective?
 The behaviour strategy that is effective in managing the behaviour
of the learner is being a role model to the students, meaning to say
that the teachers should show that they are responsible if they want
the students to be responsible as well. Student’s motivation is also
effective through the use of appropriate instructional materials.

REFLECT

Reflect on the following and write your insights.

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade /

year level do you see yourself? What routines and procedures would you
consider for this level? Why?
 If I were a teacher, I will prefer to teach in 4 th year class because at
this stage, they are more mature than in lower years. They are easy
to manage though they are independent, they can work in their own
without being told by the teacher. I would impose routines that will
help them to be responsible more.
2. Make a list of the rules you are likely to implement in this level. Why would
you choose these rules?
 The following rules are:
 Be responsible in all actions.
 Learn how to manage your time.
 Don’t forget to pray and always maintain closure to Him.
 Don’t be afraid to show the real identity of yourself.
 Don’t break any rules.
I would choose these rules to develop their self-discipline, to be
more responsible.
3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?
 Students should also be involved in making the class rules so that it
would be clear to them and they will understand the importance of
the rules and regulations that there is an appropriate reward and
punishment for the compliance of these rules. The students’
discipline should start from them in following rules and regulations.

LINK Theory to Practice

Direction: Read the items give below and encircle the correct answer.

1. Focusing on natural consequences of students’ behaviour develops

more self-regulation in the students. Which of the following teacher
statements demonstrates focusing on natural consequences?

allowed to play games in the computer later.”
B. “If it takes you longer to finish the seatwork because the time is

playground anymore.”

you will be exempted from the 3rd assignment.”

A.
B. The learners the punishments for not following the rules
C. The learners participate in the rule-making process
D. The teacher gives additional points for those who follow the
rules
3. For the teacher to establish and maintain consistent standards of
learners’ behaviour, they should do all EXCEPT _____.
A. Give immediate feedback to reinforce appropriate behaviour of
learner
B. Be open to exceptions each time a learner misbehave in class

C.
clearly and consistently.
D. Handle behaviour problems promptly and with due respect to
