Learner Diversity: The Community and Home Environment

OBSERVE, ANALYZE, REFLECT

Activity 4.1

Observing the learner’s community and home environment

To realize my Intended Learning Outcomes, I will work my way through

these steps:
1. Select a learner from the class whom you have observed.
2. Interview the teacher about the learner’s characteristics.
3. Conduct a home visit to your selected learner’s residence.
4. Interview the parents about:
a. The rules they implement at home concerning their child’s
schooling.
b. The learner’s activities while at home.
5. Describe the family in terms of:
a. Number of siblings.
b. Number of siblings in school.
6. Identify the factors in the home environment that might affect the learner’s
school performance.
7. Reflect on how a teacher can communicate effectively with the home.
Observation Guide for Individual Differences
Read the following statements carefully before you begin to observe.
Then write your observation report on the space provided.
The Learner:
1. Make a general observation of the learner. Describe him/her in each of the
domain of development:
 Physical-body built and height.(thin, chubby, underweight,
overweight), level of physical activity (fast, slow, lethargic, active
etc.)
 Social-interaction with teachers and classmates (loner, shy,
sociable, friendly, gets into fights, liked by others, etc.)
 Emotional-moods, temperament, cries easily, loses temper, happy,
shows enthusiasm, excited, indifferent, etc.)
 Cognitive (appears to understand lessons, copes with lessons,
excels, lags behind, shows reasoning skills, turn in assignments
and requirements, etc.)

Interview the Teacher:

1. What are the most noticeable characteristics of the learner? (emotional

disposition, behavior and discipline, sense of responsibility, study habits,
academic performance, relationship with peers, relationship with adults,
social adjustment)

do they discuss? How do they decide of the best course of action to
resolve issues or problems?
 I do not have any issues about the behavior of my student Simon
because he is very behave in my class so I do not have any
conversation to his parent about any disciplinary actions. The only
times that I will have a conversation with his parent is when I am
going to submit their child’s report cards.
3. How does the teacher utilize resources in the community to support the
teaching-learning process? Hoes does the teacher work with the
community to meet the needs of the learners?
 By working together with the community to support learning for
everyone’s benefits because Partnerships can serve to strengthen,
support, and even transform individual partners, resulting in
improved program quality, more efficient use of resources, and
better alignment of goals and curricula.
Interview the Parents:
1. Conduct a home visit. Once there, observe the home set-up. (Home is
orderly, family pictures in the living room, etc.)
2. Use the following interview questions. Just ask the questions with which
you feel comfortable.

THE LEARNER’S DEVELOPMENT PROFILE

Name of the Learner: Simon M. Marbella

School plays a vital role in molding the learner’s development as
well as the teacher which is the very important person in school like
the parents in the house who bears knowledge and values to share
with their learner/child.
Recommendations
 For the parents, they are responsible in disciplining and guiding
their child. They should always monitor their child’s performance in
school. Always be open to their child and give their full support and
encourage and motivate them to focus and study hard to become
successful in the near future.
 For the teachers, they can use technology to enhance their
teachings which they impart to the students to have a good quality
of teaching.

ANALYZE

Your findings and recommendations in the Learner Development Profile will help
you answer the questions here.
1. From your home visit and interview, what do you think is the style of
parenting experienced by the learner? Explain your answer.
 Authoritative parenting is present. The parents are strict yet loving.
They have clear and reasonable limits for their children.
2. Relating your data with what you learned from child development, what
family factors do you think contribute to the development and over-all
adjustment of the learner in school?
 The way the parents discipline their children and the actions such
as rewards and talking to them greatly influence the child
development.
3. Does the communication between the home-school have an effect on the
learner? If yes, what are these effects?
 Communication between homes to school has an effect to the
learner where the parents can easily communicate with the school
asking for their concerns about the learner’s performance. In that
way the parents can be able to guide their child if there’s needs an
improvement.
4. How can the teacher partner with the community to contribute to the
development and learning of the students? Who are the people or which
institutions can the teacher tap to seek advice regarding the development
and learning of the students?
 When schools and community organizations work together to
support learning for everyone’s benefits. Partnerships can serve to
strengthen, support, and even transform individual partners,
resulting in improved program quality, more efficient use of
resources, and better alignment of goals and curricula. The people
or which institutions that the teacher can tap to seek advice
regarding the development and learning of the students are the
parents of the students, the principal or even his/her co-teachers.

REFLECT

1. Reflect on your own development as a child. What type of parenting did

you experience? How did it affect you?
In my childhood days, I experienced also the authoritative parenting wherein
my parents are very strict but yet loving. They are very protective in terms of the
place where I want to go. I always needs permission and accompany with
person who is older than me. It doesn’t affect me too much because I
understand their rules and I know that it is for my own sake. And we have an
agreement also, every time that I have an achievement they gave me a reward.
In that way, I feel motivated to my study and pursue to have an achievement.

2. As a future teacher, how would you establish good home-school

collaboration? How can you work well with the parents? How can you help
them? How can they help you?
As a future teacher, I will establish good home-school collaboration through
encouraging the parents to participate to every meeting conducted in the school.
I will allow the parents to check the performance of their children. They can also
allow participating in the different activities in the school. In that way, the
relationship between the home and school become strengthen and it will also
lead to develop new activities.
