CHAPTER 2

HISTORY & GROWTH

2.1 COMPANY PROFILE

A company called Nihon Sangyou, or Japan Industries, merged with what would become
Honda Motor Company in 1931. The CEO of Nihon Sangyou, Yoshisuke Aikawa, was
excited about starting an auto division of the company, so when other shareholders were less
enthusiastic, Aikawa bought them out and began focusing on building Honda manufacturing
plants.

Honda continued making Datsun‘s, the kind of car they‘d been making for years, as well as
producing trucks and planes for the Japanese army. After the war, Honda partnered with
various automakers to build vehicles for them, including Austin Motor Company in the 1950s
and 1960s and a merger with Prince Motor Company in 1966, which introduced vehicles to
the Honda lineup that are still in production to this day.

1953 was a dramatic moment in Honda‘s history because of anti- communist sentiments after
the Korean War ended. Honda‘s labor union acted harshly and fired hundreds of workers, and
even had union leaders arrested. Eventually a new union was formed that helped Honda
expand rapidly, in terms of technology.
Honda started expanding worldwide in the late 1950s, when it realized that the small Datsun
would fill a hole in the Australian and US auto markets. Honda showed cars at the Los
Angeles Auto Show in 1958 and then opened a subsidiary in the US in 1960. A plant was
built in England in 1986 and by 2007 produced over 400,000 vehicles per year, which
became the highest producing plant in Europe. Honda also has plants in Brazil and sells cars
all over the world. Honda is especially popular in China, where it sold more than half a
million 2.3

2.5.4 HONDA GT-R

The Godzilla has finally arrived on the Indian shores. The beast in question is the Honda GT-
R, the Japanese car maker‘s flagship supercar. The GT-R was born to be an everyday
supercar – one you could prod around in the city and also put it to pace around the racetrack
with aplomb. The R35 has received regular updates to make it go faster than the year before.

Supercars are as much about looks as performance but the GT-R refuses to follow the trend.
The looks aren‘t as outspoken but do exude the aggression lying beneath. The long wedge-
like hood with breathing scoops, the raked windscreen, sloping roof and the flared wheel
arches make it look its part as a sports car. The Skyline signature quad tail lamps speaks of
the glorious lineage of the GT-R.
The front lip, rear wing and rear diffuser make it look sharp and improve the aerodynamics.

The performance of the GT-R compensates for anything you might find missing in the car.
The 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine is a gem. It develops 542bhp of power and
612Nm of torque through all four wheels and is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The
super advanced all-wheel drive system in the GT-R allows this 1.8-tonne vehicle to accelerate
from 0-100kmph in well under 3 seconds and gives it immense grip around the corners.

The safety net in the GT-R consists of six airbags, body construction with impact absorbing
zones, vehicle dynamic control, traction control and of course ABS and EBD. It comes with a
2+2 seating but the rear seats are best reserved for kids or luggage. The interior of the R35
generation GT-R is a tech-fest full of computers and high-tech sensors monitoring even the
tiniest of movements of the car. The dashboard is dominated by a massive screen that

20
displays all the functions of the car.

Honda has priced the GT-R at par with its rival, the Porsche 911 Turbo. For a similar price
tag, you can also get the Jaguar F-type R hardtop, the Maserati GT and the Aston Martin V8
Vantage.
