WHAT’S NEW (Page 19)

Energy is like money. If you have 20 peso bill, you can go to a store and buy a cornetto. But if you go to a
restaurant to buy unli wings, you will probably be kicked out. Energy is like the accounting system of the
universe. It tells us, in Science, whether something can possibly happen or whether it can’t. In climbing a
mountain, for instance, it is impossible to calculate how much energy you will require. If you don’t have
enough energy, you won’t make it. Thus, energy tells us if something can or cannot happen. Energy tells
us if someone can or cannot do something.

WHAT’S MORE (Page 20)

1. How do plants cope up with the change in season? Give a detailed description and explanation.
=Plants cope up with the change in season through adaptations. During hot seasons, plants handle
the lack of water by shedding their leaves, which tend to evaporate water into the air. During cold
seasons, most plants drop their leaves and go dormant. Plants may hold onto dead leaves for
insulation, or use deep snow like a blanket to protect against the cold.

2. How do plants capture the sun’s energy?

=Plant’s chlorophyll, a green colored pigment present in the chloroplast, captures the sun’s energy
in the process of photosynthesis.

3. What happens to light when it hits an object?

=When light hits an object, it can either be reflected, transmitted, or absorbed.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED (Page 20)

1. What wavelength of light is most important to life on earth?

=Visible light, with a wavelength of 380-750nm
2. What color/s of light does chlorophyll absorb? What color does it reflect?
=Chlorophyll absorbs blue and red light. It reflects the green color; hence we see the leaves to be
green.
3. What composes a photosystem?
=Light-harvesting complex and Reaction-center complex.
4. In what part of the photosystem does the first step of light reaction take place?
=Photosystem II
5. Differentiate the two types of photosystem.
=The two types of photosystem differ in their absorbing wavelength, where the photosystem I
absorbs the longer wavelength of light which is 700 nm while photosystem II absorbs the shorter
wavelength of light 680 nm.

***Draw photosynthesis

WHAT IS IT (Page 27)

1. What are the two kinds of reactions in photosynthesis?

=Light reaction and Calvin cycle
2. What are the basic stages of Calvin Cycle?
=Carbon Fixation, Reduction, and Regeneration
3. What are the reactants and products of photosynthesis?
=In photosynthesis, water, carbon dioxide, ATP, and NADPH are reactants while RuBP, GA3P and
oxygen are product.
