STATUS (SWS) STUDENT REPORT

ST. ANDREW’S COLLEGE OF ARTS, SCIENCE

AND COMMERCE
REPORT

I Sarona Roshan Muttath from St. Andrew’s College

of Arts, Science and Commerce studying in Mcom
part 2 conducted a survey on the status of women in
the society. I had conducted this survey in Vasai,
Mumbai from 13th January 2021 which ended on
22nd March 2021. In total 35 women were a part of
the survey. They all consisted of different marital
status, age groups and educational levels. The survey
consisted of 2 parts ie. Personal details of the
respondents and 20 questions based on the status of
women. The women were segregated into different
categories i.e. inhibited, informed, aware and
liberated. The segregation depends on the total
number of correct answers in the survey. In my
survey, in total 46 women were liberated, 4 were
aware, 1 was informed and 2 were inhibited.
In today’s era there has been a steady development
in the status of women. The women are granted
freedom and rights and are achieving great heights
by working hard for themselves and their families.
They have the right to take decisions on their own
and do not have to depend on the other members in
their family especially the male gender. They have a
voice of their own and most of the female
respondents in the survey disagree to vote for the
same political party suggested by the male in the
family, they also disagree with the traditional
manner of being fed after the family is done being
fed. Women are also handling high positions in their
work places and have been treated equally. As
compared to the women in the earlier periods the
women of this era disagree to the fact that a son is
needed to carry on the family name. They have
finally decided to come out of their traditional
thoughts and have started making efforts towards
staying independent. Such as most of the women
have disagreed that only men should drive cars and
not the women. Their thoughts have become more
liberalized. They also don’t find it necessary to be
answerable to the men of the house. In earlier days
adopting children was not acceptable as it is now.
According to the survey, 91.4% respondents are
open to the concept of adoption. Women are also
treating their sons and daughters equally in the
family, their daughters too are given the choice to
select their preferred field of education. Thus, it can
be seen through this survey that women are moving
and growing forward to a brighter future. While
conducting this survey I realized that most of the
respondents were aware about laws protecting
women and the right marriageable age for girls.
By conducting this survey, I can perceive that
women are becoming independent. They have a
mind and voice of their own. They are no longer
afraid to voice out their own opinions. Awareness
among women about themselves has increased
considerably. Thus, it can be concluded that women
are no longer unaware of how much they can
contribute in the society.
