is your lesson?) End

Content Standard(s): 8.EE.8c: Solve real-world and mathematical problems leading to to linear equations in two variables. For example, given coordinates for two
pairs of points, determine whether the line through the first pair of points intersects the line through the second pair.
ELD Standards:
Learning Goal(s) or I can write and solve a system of equations given a real world situation.

Three Focus Students
Focus Student 1: English Learner I provided graphics/visuals to facilitate understanding of the steps we take to solve system of
equation problems by elimination. I also incorporated visual representations of the word
problems to help visualze the scenario.

Students are given time to talk with peers and restate their understanding in their own words.
Focus Student 2: IEP, 504, GATE, GATE (3rd Period): I included a challenge problem for students in the warm up. It requires
or other identified need more steps than the review problems.
Focus Student 3: A student who
has had life experience(s) either
inside or outside of school, that
may result in a need for additional
social- emotional and/or academic
support

Instructional Plan
Activating Background Knowledge

Instructional Strategies   Warm Up - Students begin working the first 5 minutes of class on two system of equations problems using the elimination method.
Students will trade papers and they will be corrected by a peer.
Informal Assessment   The two problems serve as the informal assessment. Students receive immediate feedback regarding this previously learned skill.
Teacher will observe students’ work during the warm-up and will view all warm-ups when collected on Friday.

Instructional Input

Instructional Strategies      Whole Class: Using graphic on Google Slide Deck, review procedural steps to how to solve a system of equations by elimination.
Present an example problem that is not in standard form. Proceed through the checklist with students to review how to alter the equations
so they can be solved by elimination.

Pair/Share - table partners turn and explain the steps taken to solve the example problem.

Individual: Write the learning objective on printed notes.

I DO: Teacher reads example 1 and uses a think aloud strategy to model to students the type of questions they should ask themselves.
Teacher identifies what variables to find and uses a visual model to display what is happening in the scenario. Teacher suggests what they
should write in their notes (see slide 10). Teacher writes two equations representing ticket sales from day 1 and day 2. Students write
steps on their printed notes. The system of equations is solved by elimination and checked for accuracy.

Pair/Share - Students turn to their table partner and explain how to write two equations from the given scenario.

“Nose Goes:” Selected student goes to gather 2 whiteboards for their table group. Students will work in partner pairs for the whiteboard
activity.

WE DO: On example 2, teacher will use inquiry strategies to guide the students to find the relevant information in the problem. After
reading the question the teacher will ask: What are we trying to find out? & How will I sort the given information?

Think/Pair/Share - students will turn to their table partner and identify the variables and share ideas about how to sort the given
information. Students will write their responses on the whiteboard.

“Boards Up:” Students will share their responses to their whiteboards.

Whole Class: Teacher displays an example of how you can organize the information using pictures.

Think/Pair/Share - students work with partners to write two equations that represent the scenario.

“Boards Up:” Teacher is able to assess if students know how to write equations from real world scenarios. Teacher will model how to
write equations. Teacher will engage with students as they proceed through the steps of solving system of equation by elimination.

Informal Assessment      Whiteboard activity: check for understanding

Closure
Instructional Strategies
Review: Today we wrote & solved systems of equations from real world scenarios. We read the problem and looked for what they want
us to find (these are the variables). We sorted the information using lists, pictures, charts, etc. and then wrote a math equations to
represent our data. We are able to solve for the variable by using elimination.

YOU DO: Ideally the students are ready to try the 3rd example on their own, then check in with their table partners to compare results.
If needed teacher will work walk the students through the process or offer one-to-one support while moving throughout the room.

Formal Assessment      Students complete examples 3 & 4 independently for homework.
