Friction and Parasitic Loss
Reduction For Modern Heavy-
Duty Diesel Engine
BACKGROUND:
The fuel burned in a heavy-duty diesel engine up to 10% is wasted through
mechanical losses. One of the largest contributors is mechanical or
rubbing friction on various core engine components like Piston-ring Liner
system, Crankshaft & bearing system and valve train system and all these
systems contribute to 70 to 80% of the mechanical losses in a heavy-duty
diesel engine and remaining 20 to 30% losses occurring through engine
auxiliaries.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION & EXPECTED

SOLUTION:
Come up with innovative ideas to reduce the friction on these core engine
components & parasitic loss on engine driven accessories by at least 20%
for Heavy Duty diesel engine applications. Potentially Caterpillar team is
looking for the ideas through innovative design, surface, material and
lubrication technologies etc.
Propose the advanced methodologies / Technologies that results in
reducing frictional loss
Provide the feasibility and recommendations to reduce the losses and
improve the available power in an internal combustion engine.
Components can be modified/updated to improve fuel consumption
and increase durability.
Define the functional requirements of the engine sub-
systems/components that need to be modified to meet the technical
requirements.
CONSTRAINTS:
No compromise on Durability, Reliability and Warranty requirements of
Engine and components from existing specification

EXPECTED OUTCOME FORMAT:

Design recommendation & functional requirements and cost impact
