Day (Big Group Activity-15 minutes) Communication, Critical Thinking,
Creative Thinking /Honor and Leadership, Temperance and Obedience,
Responsibility
Note: This activity will be used as a springboard to the discussion in
defining indoor and basis, perhaps, we all have limited free time or worst of
some almost no free time at all outdoor recreation.
A. Explain to the students that a day is spent on three things: existence
time (biological needs such as eating, sleeping), subsistence time
(economic needs. work, chores, study), and free time (what remains). Ask
the students an estimate of how their day is spent:
1. How many hours of your day are spent on existence time?
2. How many hours of your day are spent on subsistence time?
3. How many hours are left as your free time?
4. In your free time, what do you usually do? Answers may vary from
watching TV, social media such as Facebook, Instagram, etc.,
hanging out with friends, movie-going, or playing basketball.
B. On a day-to-day. However, we all have longer breaks during the
semestral break, summer, Christmas break, or long weekends. During those
occasions, how do your students spend their free time? Ask the students:
1. Have you and your family or perhaps friends ever gone
somewhere out of town or somewhere nearby?
2.Where did you go?
3.What activities did you engage in?
C. Ask the students, preferably everyone. Prior to the student giving an
answer, make two columns on the board (labeled A and B). (Do not yet
disclose the proper labels to the students). Column A will be the outdoor
recreation activity and Column B will be the indoor recreation activity or
otherwise.
D. When students answer, write the answers of the students to the correct
column without saying or explaining anything to them. For example:
Student A: "We went to the beach" (Beach is outdoors with nature, so write
"swimming - beach" in Column A.)
Student B: "We went to a resort with a swimming pool and we also swam."
(Swimming in the pool is also outdoors but is man-made, not with nature, so
write it under Column B-"swimming pool - swimming.")
E. Be guided by the definitions of indoor recreation, and outdoor
recreation with emphasis on the concept of an activity done with nature.
F. After getting their answers, proceed to the discussion.
