3- Spectrometer
Aim: To determine the grating element of a given diffraction grating using a spectrometer.

Apparatus: Spectrometer, grating, mercury source etc

1) The spectrometer is adjusted for parallel rays using Schuster’s method

2) Grating is mounted on the turn table
3) The telescope is brought in line with the collimator to observe the direct image
4) The telescope is rotated towards right to view the first order spectra.
5) The crosswire is set on the line whose wavelength needs to be determined.
6) Reading for θ is noted down.
7) The telescope is further moved to right for the second order
8) Steps 5 and 6 are repeated
9) The telescope is brought toward the left and the procedure is repeated.
10) Wavelength is calculated using the formula

Observations: Least count of spectrometer: 0.5/30 = 0.0167◦
