EXPERIMENT 1.3

TITLE OF THE EXPERIMENT

Sketch freehand all types of riveted heads and make table of welding joint symbols

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT

Draw orthographic views of double riveted zigzag lap joint and double riveted chain butt
joint with two equal cover plates. Show its front view, full in section and top view in in first
angle projection

THEORY AND EXPLANATION

When two plates or parts are joined together, they may joined permanently or temporarily.
Thus the joints may be classified as

1.     Permanent joints or fastenings, and

2.     Temporary joints or fastenings.

Permanent fastenings

These are joints which cannot be disassembled without breaking the connecting or joining
components. Welded joints, riveted joints are permanent joints.
Temporary fastenings

These joints are made temporarily so that they can be disassembled whenever required
without destroying the connecting or joining components. Screwed joints and pin joints are
temporary joints.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF REVITS AND JOINTS GRAPHS

A simple rivet is shown below in the figure:

Riveting is the process of forming another rivet-head, after the rivet is placed in the holes
previously drilled or punched through the plates, is called riveting.

The above figure shows the method of making Rivet heads

The rivet heads are classified in to three types according to the Indian standard specifications:

1. Rivet heads for general purposes (below 12mm diameter) according to IS: 2155-1982
(Reaffirmed 1996)
2. As shown below in Fig 6.2
Fig 6.2

Fig.6.3.Rivet heads for general purposes (below 12mm diameter)

3. Rivet heads for general purposes (from 12mm to 48mm diameter) according to IS:
1929-1982 (Reaffirmed 1996)
Fig 6.3

What are the different applications of rivets is the following:

 For machine riveting and structural work, snap heads are used.
 For ship building, counter sunk heads are used.
 For hand hammering, conical heads are used.

Below we will specify further the different types of joints and what kind of rivets go
with each joint

6.1.3.Types of riveted Joints

The riveted joints are used in ship-building and for the construction of steel buildings,
bridges, boilers, tanks etc., there are two types of riveted joints depending on the way in
which the plates are joined

1- Lap joint
2- Butt joint
1- Lap joint

A lap joint is a joint in which one plate is kept over the other and then the two plates are
riveted together.

When the joint is made with only one row of rivets, it is called a single-riveted lap joint.

The sectional front view and top view of a single-riveted lap joint are shown in the fig.6.6.
The width of overlap L is equal to 3d.

1- But Joint

Butt Joint is a simple coming together of two edges or faces. The joints can be fixed by
simply gluing but more often is reinforced or strengthened before doing so. Butt Joints can be
used to widen boards, make frames and create carcasses.
GRAPHS AND EXAMPLES ON SOLIDWORKS INTERFACE:

Making a simple rivet joint on SolidWorks:

Starting with the front plane, and going on making a circle in the middle of the planes as
shown in the below demo picture:
Using trim entities to make the desired shape of the riveted joint as shown below

After that we use the revolve command to give the sketch the desired shape as shown below:
Finally we assign a material to the rivet we made using the following feature:

Finally we have designed a rivet and assigned the desired material to it, in this sketch I have
used 1406 Stainless Steel as shown below:
In the above picture we can see the parts that was designed and further matted to match the
desired shape and size.
Designing the joint the will be used further.
Using the mate command, this is the result of the joint and rivet we designed using
SolidWorks interface.
