Ideal Gases

1) Calculate the densities of each gas at STP conditions. Express your answers in 2 decimal places.
a) CF2Cl2 b) CO2 c) HCl
2) A cylinder is filled with toxic COS gas to a pressure of 800.0 Torr at 24◦C. According to the
manufacturer’s specifications, the cylinder may rupture if the pressure exceeds 35 psi. What is
the maximum temperature up to which the cylinder may be heated without exceeding the
pressure rating?
3) A sample containing nitrogen and oxygen at 23◦C with a total pressure of 1.30 atm in a
container with a volume of 820 mL has a partial pressure of 0.82 atm for nitrogen. How many
moles of each gas are present?
4) In an experiment, a mixture of gas occupies a volume of 3.0 L at a temperature of 22.5◦C. The
mixture contains 14.0 g water, 11.5 g oxygen, and 37.3 g nitrogen. Calculate the total pressure
and the partial pressures of each gas.
5) If you need 400.0 mL of hydrogen gas to conduct an experiment at 20.5◦C and 748 Torr, how
many grams of Zn should be treated with excess HCl to obtain this much gas?
6) What volume of oxygen at 24◦C and 0.88 atm is needed to completely react via combustion with
45 g of methane gas?
7) Clouds of hydrogen molecules have been detected deep in an interstellar space. It is estimated
that these clouds contain about 1 x 1010 hydrogen molecules per m3, and have a temperature of
just 25 K. Using these data, find the approximate pressure in such a cloud.
8) The density of a gaseous compound was found to be 1.23 g/L at 330 K and 150 Torr. What is the
molar mass of the compound?
9) A vessel of volume 22.4 L contains 2.0 mol H2and 1.0 mol N2 at 273.15 K initially. All the H2
reacted with sufficient N2 to form NH3. Calculate the partial pressures and the total pressure of
the final mixture.
